SSP is an amazing experience with 35 other students, 4 Teaching Assistants, and 3 Faculty members. It was the best five weeks I have ever had and has left an indelible mark in my heart. I cannot say how much this experience has changed me.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I attended SSP and can undoubtedly declare that it has been the most fruitful educational and social experience I have ever participated in.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Keep it the way it is!!!

The Summer Science Program provided an incredible 5 weeks for me. The entire camp was amazingly informative and eye-opening. I got the opportunity to operate telescopes, visit White Sands Missile Base, and meet some of the smartest people I've ever known - all things I couldn't have done without the Summer Science Program.

SSP is an excellent organization. I attended as a student in the early 1970s and it was a life-transforming summer. Although I did not pursue a career in science I none-the-less benefitted tremendously from the exposure to an intellectual community that was not available in my home town at the time. Over the past 40 years I have kept in touch with the organization and have been proud of the way they have grown and managed SSP.

This is a great program that grabs talented students and shows them that they can be a part of a group of highly motivated and talented students that can do science. Even 45 years later, I remember what I great and transforming experience I had that summer. Highly recommended!

Three thin gs happen to every student who attends SSP: 1) For the first time in your life, you are not the smartest kid in the class; 2) for the first time in your life, you don't immediately understand what is being taught; and 3) for the first time in your life, you are surrounded by your peers...and you are truly popular...and for super-bright teenagers who often don't fit into the typical high school social scene, SSP's collegiality is thrilling.

I grew up in a small farming town with a very poor educational system. My dad never finished high school; my mother did not go to college. I was always the brightest kid in class, but because of my limited worldview, I had no concept of what was possible.

As a student at a fairly good high school, I excelled in my classes, but my success made me a target for harassment. At the Summer Science Program, I found a group of peers that enjoyed the same things that I did and understood where I was coming from. I learned a tremendous amount that summer, but perhaps most importantly, when I returned to high school for my senior year, I had a better perspective on what was important, proceeded to apply myself, applied to and was accepted by an excellent college, and launched my technical career.

I attended SSP over 30 years ago, and it was one of the most important experiences of my life. I attended a small, rural high school and had never had the opportunity to learn from science professionals and work with other top students. My experience at SSP encouraged me to go on to a top college and continue to challenge myself. I am happy to continue to give back to the program and support the next generation to have the same great experience that I did.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the student feedback I read each year. It's clear the program has made a difference in lives of thousands of students at this point, it's rewarding to be a part of that.

Being a student at SSP was a transformative experience for me. It was the first time I traveled far from home on my own. It was the first time I found myself part of a peer group of comparably smart and curious and motivated students. It introduced me to the process of science and the first scientists I had ever known, and was the first time I began to realize that a career in science might be both possible and desirable. Meeting the other students and realizing how much we had in common and how much I could learn from them made me completely revise my plan for applying to college: I was no longer intimidated by top institutions, if it meant I could spend my time interacting with people like these! And I don't doubt that my experience at SSP made me more qualified for those top institutions. The guest speakers, including Paul MacCready and Maarten Schmidt, were absolutely inspirational: here were real people who had made significant contributions to the world through thinking, questioning, and lots of hard work. I began to think that maybe someday I could do that too. SSP also gave me a jump start on basic astronomy knowledge and the skills I would need for research, which greatly smoothed the transition to undergraduate, and then graduate, research. Coming back to SSP as a teaching assistant reminded me of the unique social dynamic that they manage to foster every year, where talents and quirks are accepted and appreciated and everyone is respected for who they are. Once again, it also gave me a jump start on teaching skills, which I was then able to hone as a graduate student. This was the first year I served on the admissions committee, and I was once again impressed by the demonstrated level of intelligence and passion by the applicants.

SSP was the most amazing experience I have ever lived. It was very intellectually and socially engaging. 36 people plus staff formed a really big family over the course of 6 weeks, a family who not only worked hard, but also had a lot of fun. In 6 weeks I learned more about myself then I learned in one school year and I made more friends than ever expected. Thank you, SSP!

There aren't enough words to explain why SSP was such a great experience for me. Probably because it weren't only six weeks of hard working, but also a great ( maybe most enjoyable) socially experience. We all connected very well and I feel like I found my second family in there. I will never forget our late night observations, or the time spent in Weir computer labs working for the OD. I will always remember our Saturday movie night and our "Futurama" episodes, I will always remember the way we fed the ducks in the last night at 6 a.m. in the morning, or the "Physics dance" that we had to do when we were late for class. It wasn't only Math. It wasn't only Astronomy. It wasn't only Programming. It wasn't even only Physics. It was the most interesting mixture of all this, multiplied at infinity by our happiness in acting for the first time in our lives as a research team. It was our excitement in finding the orbital elements of that asteroid. It was the pleasure of working in the same team with probably your best friends in the world. Staying now in my room at home, 7,000 miles away from New Mexico, but still keeping in touch with my friends, I feel like I have finally discovered people that make me happy. And I will always appreciate it. As soon as SSP finished, I came back in Romania and qualified for the International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics. I am more than sure that I couldn't do that without SSP. It helped me more than anything on both professional and personal plans. Thank you SSP! Thank you for having a wonderful time, an amazing summer, an unforgettable experience. Thank you!

After SSP finished, I came back at home where I had the National Selection Tests for the International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics and for the International Olympiad in Astronomy. I qualified for both, and I am sure that SSP played a great role
