SUMMER SCIENCE PROGRAM INC

I attended SSP four years ago and have had some phenomenal experiences since - inventing shoes at the Innovation Lab at NIKE, studying product design in Sweden, leading a 30-person research team in India - but the 5 weeks at SSP remain the best of my life. SSP was my first exposure to a truly intellectually-curious community and to the beauty of teamwork. It changed my life and for that I will be forever thankful.

SSP is an extraordinary summer experience for young and enthusiastic students below 18, to experience the fields of astronomy, advanced mathematics and programming in an intense five week period. From swing dances to enlightening guest lectures about Titan's monsoon rains and effects of atrazine on frogs, SSP has definitely changed my perception of a career in sciences and helped me to decide what to do.

SSP pushed me to my full potential spiritually, physically, and mentally. Not only were the lectures enlightening and the projects challenging, but the precious camaraderie among the TAs, students, and faculty members was priceless.

This program was great! I met bright, curious high schoolerse from all around the world, and I learned more about calculus, astronomy, and physics than I ever could have dreamed! Also, SSP introduced me to programming for the first time, and though I probably don't want to make programming my livelihood, I am definitely glad I learned this important skill and I certainly find it fun and engaging.

I am now a better problem solver and a better time-manager. Also, I realized that I can find success if I try hard to attain it, and I now know that I definitely want to go into science in college and beyond.

I would make it six weeks instead of five! It was very rushed because six weeks of material had to be squeezed into five weeks, and with six weeks, I would feel as though I understood the topics more (plus, there would be more time to do fun things that won't have to be "mandatory fun time").
The Summer Science Program is a fantastic nonprofit organization for advanced high school students in math and science. Both the academic and social aspects are phenomenal; students receive the opportunity to work together with other outstanding young scientists from around the world to harness and master complex topics in mathematics, physics, programming and astrophysics. Additionally, these students are granted the extraordinary opportunity to utilize the facilities of the Etscorn Observatory to track and later calculate the orbit of an asteroid as it travels around the sun.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in the remainder of my academics: it has improved my reasoning and logical abilities, and has exposed me to realms and branches of science that I would otherwise have remained ignorant of for many years.

My five weeks at SSP 2011 were by far the best five weeks of my life. Everyone I interacted with was absolutely incredible, from the students to the TAs to the professors. The program itself was definitely challenging, but the highly intellectual and collaborative environment that SSP created made me actually WANT to do crazy things like stay up until 3 am to debug a Python program. Best of all, even after coming home, I feel truly and deeply connected to the 35 students I shared this experience with. I would recommend SSP to any science-oriented student in a heartbeat.

SSP was a great program.
This past summer , I was a student who participated in the program. All I can say that it surpassed even my highest expectations by colossal amounts.
Lectures, lunch, lecture, dinner, work. This may not sound like fun, but it was these elements of SSP and the other people there that made this truly the best summer of my entire life.
Upon coming home from SSP, I longed to return. I fervently wished that I had stayed awake more in lecture, and had gone for more midnight runs. I would give anything to experience SSP once again.

The Summer Science Program is a one-of-a-kind organization that provides opportunities unparalleled in nature. Attracting the best students from all over the world, it allows high school teenagers to participate in advanced scientific research at a very early age.

As a 2011 Summer Science Program participant, I had the privilege of tracking a Near-Earth Asteroid. After collecting data from the telescope on-site, I used advanced mathematics and astrophysics to calculate the orbit of the selected asteroid.

Expand! The Summer Science Program is very popular among high school students already; however, its effects can only be more pronounced by notifying more high schools of this prestigious institution.
By far one of my best and most cherished summers. The intimacy of some 36 people, best with some common interest; the warmth of quietly working and trekking across campus to trace a single unseen object in the sky, night after sleepless night of intense and regret-less science, numbers and figures and observational images. RA and Dec and HA and f and g series and modified time. Having these people and this one place grow so very dear to you, all fiercely brilliant, through what is so often misunderstood as a cold and mechanical study, hard science.
