I first learned about Stanford Settlement when my daughter worked for its Children’s Program. Stories told revealed many of the kids faced difficult circumstances in their lives and it was obvious Stanford was their safe haven. This was not a place just to “hang out”, but also a place that gave kids a sense of belonging and hope for their future. The program includes planned activities that are fun, but also teach social skills, self-confidence, and decision-making. When a child is facing specific social or academic difficulties, Stanford’s professional staff connects with the kids’ school and parents or guardians to help resolve those issues.

Children ought to have hope and a chance to succeed in life, and Stanford provides that to kids who otherwise might have no encouragement, support, or direction. Because kids mean so much to me and I believe in what Stanford does, I support Stanford by attending its events, and now serve on its Board. But Stanford does even more; it offers a variety of programs and services to the entire family, including teens through its Teen Center program and seniors through its Senior Center program! For over 75 years Stanford’s professional, caring and dedicated staff have been a guiding light to many citizens of our community.

If you want to make a difference in the lives of others by supporting this worthwhile organization, I hope you will take the time to learn more about Stanford Settlement – you could not be disappointed. Michele Mercado

My first experience with the Stanford Settlement was through a volunteering opportunity with the Sacramento Kings. The Kings had partnered with the Settlement to renovate one of their classrooms and provide a fun & interactive experience for their teens. Kings players and employees donated computers, games and their time painting and refurbishing the room. It was the first time I witnessed how a local business could make such a huge impact by donating their time and resources to the Stanford Settlement.

The kids got to interact with the NBA players, play games and socialize. The newly renovated room was full of color and the kids were full of smiles! The Stanford Settlement's volunteers and employees were so passionate and professional. The impact they make everyday was very clear.

That experience has always stuck with me, and recently, I joined the Stanford Settlement's board of trustees because I want to ensure years of future experiences, like the one I witnessed first hand.
