I have been volunteering at Spring Creek Horse Rescue for a few weeks now. I consider myself to be part of the team and dedicate any free time I have. In the short time that I have been volunteering, I have seen miraculous recovery in a few of the horses that have come to the rescue because they were abused or neglected. I'm an animal person and didn't know much about horses, but I am learning something new everyday! The Director,Diane, has so much knowledge she's willing to share. She is an amazing woman to work with. We all work side by side to reach a common goal. It's not just about "scooping the poop." I get actual interaction with the horses. She has dedicated her life to the these horses and gives her body and soul to the safety and well being of them. She's passionate and loves the horses like they are her own children. I wish there were more honest people out there like her. The horses of Spring Creek Horse Rescue are beautiful and each one of them has their own personality. The Rescue relies on donations to stay alive and I can only give my time at the moment. If you are thinking about donating, you can visit the rescue and see what they do. Really, the only way you can understand is if you visit.
The Great!
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
watching some of the horses "bounce back" from their conditions.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
help with more donations. I'm actually going to organize a fundraiser for hay this winter!
I am on year 3 as a volunteer for Spring Creek Horse Rescue in Colorado.
The horses here receive the care needed to rehabilate, whether it is an underweight problem from neglect, or trust issues from improper handling, or injuries. I have seen over 40 horses adopted since volunteering and how rewarding it is to see a beautiful and spiritual horse go to a caring home. The Rescue also works with the community by providing instruction on care and also as a place for people with community service hours to work and learn. The director, Diane, I am in awe of; she loves these unfortunate animals and cares from them until trust is again established. Especially kudos to her. The Rescue is always in need of donations for feed and medicine for our charges.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
Many, many horses have been adopted out to new caring homes and this is so, so rewarding for the rescue.

My wish for Spring Creek Rescue is to have a place of its own to call home. It is now on a rental location and the future is uncertain. That is one big wish, so my lessor wish is to have funding for the care of the horses.
I have recently started working as a volunteer at Spring Creek Horse Rescue...the place is exceptionally clean, the horses are well cared for and well loved...I feel Diane is doing an outstanding job...it is a joy to be there and very rewarding...grateful horses...

I've been training horses for over 20 years. I've rescued retired race horses and seen many rescues throughout the years. My experience as a Volunteer at Spring Creek has been an EXCEPTIONAL one. Diane McCracken is truly a Loving Horse Woman. She is passionate about saving, rehabilitating and protecting the horses she cares for. She looks beyond injury, neglect, attitude and even the advice of Veterinarians to put down injured or ill horses to save these special animals. There are countless stories of horses that were not put down that are not only alive but thriving and healthy. Her success is shown by her dedication of over 30 years. For many years she rescued horses on her own without anyone's help. She has done and continues to do this work from her heart. No matter how poor the horse's condition when they arrive, before long they relax, gain weight and improve in body and mind. The environment is always clean, safe and loving. The best part is, Spring Creek Horse Rescue will only adopt a Horse out to a Loving, Responsible, FOREVER Home. Of all the rescue organizations I've seen, this is the best. Every horse is happy and you can see the gratitude in their eyes for having their lives saved from the terrors they've endured. I am honored to be able to volunteer for such a professional and caring organization.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Purchase a large piece of property to become the permanent home for the rescue to include land and facilities that can accommodate more horses, provide more turn out pastures, training facilities and produce it's own hay.

Spring Creek Horse Rescue is the horse rescue of horse rescues. Never have I seen someone who cares more for horses than Diane. She has devoted her whole life to horses giving up every comfort that a person could have just to save a few more horses from meeting a horrifying end. Before starting my volunteer work at Spring Creek Horse Rescue I didn't have any idea how prevalent horse abuse and slaughter are in the US. Diane gives these horses her heart and soul.

SPRING CREEK HORSE RESCUE, CARING FOR HORSES IS A TOUGH JOB FOR ONE PERSON, LET ONLY FOR MORE THAN 25 HORSES. DIANE GETS UP EARLY EVERY MORNING AND STARTS THE DAY BY FEEDING, CHECKING THE HORSES, GROOMING, CLEANING UP AFTER THEM, AND MAKING SURE THEY ALL ARE CONTENT. THESE HORSES WERE ABUSED, NEGLECTED, OR NOT WANTED, THEN THEY COME TO THE RESCUE WHERE THE HORSES REALIZE THEY ARE NOT GOING TO HAVE TO STARVE FOR THE NIGHT OR BEING SICK. SPRING CREEK HORSE RESCUR IS A TRUELY WONDERFUL PLACE FOR THESE HORSES AND EVEN THE PEOPLE WHO VOLUNTEER LOVE DOING TIME THERE.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
BUY THERE OWN PROPERTY HAVE STALLS FOR THE HORSES, SUPPORT THE HORSES WITH HAY GROWN ON THE PROPERTY, HABE REAL WATER BUCKETS WITH HEATERS SO THEY WOULD NOT HAVE TO CHOP ICE BY HAND IN THE WINTER, AND ALOT MORE.

Spring Creek Horse Rescue facility is a clean, caring place for horses without homes. Diane is the care-taker for 25-40 horses. Each day is devoted to care of these very lucky horses. Diane knows the personality and needs of each and has amazing passion for her charges. I am in awe of the energy and love she has for these amazing creatures.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
the change in horses who come injured, ill, distrustful, and physically unfit: Under Diane's care I've seen these problems reversed, and horses adopted to homes.

be like Diane.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
getting to know and work with a person, Diane, who is deeply passionate about her charges and is very knowledgeable.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
Diane is the staff!
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
the most wonderful day for Diane (and her charges)!
Ways to make it better...
only I volunteered more!
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
finding a permanent, affordable acreage for Diane and her mission.
One thing I'd also say is that...
I'm 63 and it is rare to find someone so dedicated to her cause.

Spring Creek horse rescue provides a much needed service in saving unwanted, orphaned, or abused horses in southwest Colorado. We adopted a wonderful horse (Darla) nearly two years ago and have been active in helping the program since. Here is her story: Darla and her daughter Strawberry came to the rescue from a “home with good intentions, but little experience” of horse ownership. Her owner first contacted us to tell us that Darla probably needed to be put down, but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. She asked if we would use our knowledge to try to save her, or at least alleviate her pain. The owner had given up. Darla had gotten tangled in a fence a few years ago. Tragically, she had completely torn the heel bulb off her left front hoof. The injury exposed her to the elements and infection. She also developed a very deep crack on the inside of this foot from exposure. The Owner’s farrier mis-diagnosed the ailment and mis-treatment damaged some of the surrounding area. Over a few years, the hoof deteriorated to the point of putting Darla’s life in jeopardy. When Darla arrived at the rescue, we called our vet who pulled the shoes and cut away at the crack. He was able to find healthy tissue. Accurate diagnosis was made. The leg was x-rayed to determine how extensive the damage was. Our farrier arrived the next day. He put on backwards shoes to support the heel bulb that was missing, and we soaked the foot twice a day for the infection. Our farrier declared her fit to ride as soon as she had enough foot to support her. After a long time of care to improve her health, she has been adopted by us. Darla has a forever, loving home now with people who care for her damaged hoof as part of her daily routine. She is pampered and ridden and has adapted to her new life. We are THRILLED with her and the efforts made by Spring Creek. Her hoof has grown out completely now and our farrier continues her care. For the previous owner, a novice working with unskilled people, Spring Creek made it appear easy. However, with skilled farriers, vets, and knowledgeable horsemanship skills, this story has a very happy ending!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
participating with people of like interests and passion; interacting to learn more myself.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
diverse and informative.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
find and buy a permanent property well-suited to the requirements of keeping and caring for many horses.
Ways to make it better...
I was able to have the time to participate as a volunteer on a more regular basis.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
finding consistent resources to provide more space and more covered facilities, stables, etc.
One thing I'd also say is that...
given the limited resources and space, Diane is doing a miraculous job.
