I've been to many of the performances and am always astounded at the clever story telling of the performers. It is apparent that the guidance and coaching they receive from Speakeasy staff enables them to have the confidence and skill to make the story lively.
SpeakeasyDC has exposed me to the wonderful world of storytelling. It is not just telling stories, it is sharing a part of a person's life experiences. The warm and friendly atmosphere is always welcoming to all who attend the shows.
Speakeasy DC is a wonderful organization that encourages members of the community to share their compelling stories. Every month I look forward to the 2nd Tuesday so I can sit and listen to real stories from real people. People who are brave enough to put themselves on a stool behind a microphone in front of more than 100 people.
But Speakeasy helps to make sure they're prepared and ready by offering speaking lessons which teaches them how to convey their thoughts.
So often we rely on movies and youtube clips to entertain us, but it's stories like those told at Speakeasy which bring us back to the real world, and help us feel closer to our community.

Speakeasy is such an amazing experience. I am heartened to see the revival of storytelling, especially when the stories are told so well. Common human themes are exposed and discussed at each monthly show, reminding all of us that we are not so different. No to mention I have so much fun at Speakeasy!

I've been a donor to SpeakeasyDC for more than five years now, and I've seen it grow from a small monthly gathering in a modest-sized jazz club to a vital community of people who still attend those ever-bgger monthly shows, but can also: attend classes to learn the craft themselves; pack Woolly Mammoth theater for special storytelling shows; and see the Moth's founder George Dawes Green talk about his work during another special event Speakeasy hosted.
What really impresses me about Speakeasy is that in a multicultural city where the cultures too often remain separate, it really is a place where all people come together -- and where every story gets told.
after years of watching my husband on stage I finally took the plunge and performed with Speakeasy back in May 2009. It was an amazing experience that allowed me to bond with others on a creative level while tapping into my own (long-lost) creative self!...so much fun!
I began attending the SpeakeasyDC events when a friend invited me, and I have been hooked since. A supportive community, wonderful heartfelt expressions of highly personnel stories, a venue unlike any other in DC. I have come to truly appreciate the unique space that the SpeakeasyDC team has been able to create.
