As a longtime volunteer I have been priveleged to witness the extraordinary efforts the wonderful staff and volunteers of this organization makes to rescue, provide veterinary and basic care, and train and socialize unwanted and/or abused animals and adopt them into loving homes. The escape of the stray cat is an unfortunate accident, but I'm certain the staff did everything possible to recover the animal. I find it a bit disturbing that someone would disparage an organization that does so much good for the animals and the community, without public funding, based on one negative experience.

I have to agree with Carrie18. I used to volunteer at the Briarcliff shelter and help socialize the cats until I started working full time again and got "caught up in life." I have also donated to this organization for many years and still do. I witnessed how many neglected and abandoned animals came in every day and the staff went above and beyond to take care of these poor animals, no matter the cost. I still get the updates each week on which animals have been adopted and it is truly inspiring. This is a very caring animal shelter and I will continue to support.

Unfortunately things happen & I'm sorry the stray cat got out of his crate. I am a volunteer at the SPCA of Westchester & know that every staff member cares for every animal that comes through the shelter. I have no doubts that the persons being blamed for this feel horrible & obviously it was not intentional. Emotions get caught up with people & it's sad this person is lashing out at great & very caring people. This shelter has done so much good for abused & homeless animals you have no idea. Shannon Laukhuf is a very caring person & a great Director and has done so much good for the animals. It's a Great shelter.

That's odd, I have been to the SPCA of Westchester numerous times...adopted both my dogs and a cat there and have had a few feral cats spayed/neutered there and everyone was wonderful...the staff and volunteers were all very friendly and helpful. The shelter animals were also very well taken care of compared to some other animal shelters I have seen. I feel very bad that your cat escaped, but it sounds like it was an honest mistake. To judge a charity as a whole based off of one isolated experience is a shame when they do so much good for the community.

I had a horrifying experience with this organization. I am a longtime donor who took a stray cat in to be neutered. When I left the Simpson Clinic, the tech had not latched the crate properly and my cat, Chubbers, hit the gate, got out and ran away. The techs came out to look for him but we never found him. I wrote an email later, asking they refund my 185 dollars neuter fee. Today I got a call from the executive director who told me techs in the parking lot (I was alone in the lot) saw someone "hovering over the cage), again I was alone. When I told her that, she back-pedaled, blaming my faulty cage which was fine when I took the cat it that morning. Shannon Laukhuf was unsympathetic and didn't even try to make a heartbroken pet owner feel better as much as assign blame. To me. Very disheartening. I'll find another animal charity to give my dollars to.
