Rating: 4.96 stars   47 reviews

Issues: Animals

Location: PO Box 70286 Houston TX 77270 USA

Mission: SNAP''s mission is to prevent the suffering and death of cats and dogs due to overpopulation and preventable diseases, especially in low-income areas.
Direct beneficiaries per year: 45,000 animals per yer
Geographic areas served: Houston and San Antonio
Programs: The first of its kind in the nation, this mobile clinic started in 1994 in Harris County, Texas, to take spay-neuter and rabies vaccination services directly into low-income neighborhoods, offering them free to indigent families on need-based public assistance programs. It helps about 5,000 cats and dogs annually. We have recently acquired a second mobile clinic for Houston that so far has only worked at the city shelter but which we want to use for special projects and backup for the original mobile clinic. The project has been funded to go into neighboring counties on special projects.

I adopted my dog from a local rescue and took him to SNAP to be neutered and get all his shots. The people were fantastic and made my pup feel right at home. When you walk into the facility you can see how much they truly love all the animals. They do a tremendous service to the city of Houston.

I took a rescue puppy (Baily) to the SNAP Houston Wellness Clinic. Our wait was relatively short, the front desk staff was extremely nice and professional...they played with little Baily while we waited. Finally, the vet who checked out Baily was also very professional and helpful. The best part of my visit was that SNAP charges cost for all their services. SNAP is such a wonderful organization!!!!

SNAP is a wonderful organization for the welfare of animals in Houston. I have seen, first hand, how their efforts to curb the overpopulation of stray dogs and cats in the city are truly to prevent them from becoming statistics in the animal shelters. The more animals spayed or neutered, means less animals killed needlessly. Their ability to provide spay and neuter assistance in low income areas is unprecedented, and completely needed, as well as their affordable veterinary care. Without them, I don't know where Houston would be.

Since I moved to San Antonio two years ago, the SNAP organization has allowed me to save the lives of 2 dogs and 1 cat. With their affordable services, I was able to neuter/spay them, get their necessary shots and have them all microchipped. Without SNAP, I would not have been able to take in these animals off the street and provide them with a forever home. The individuals who work there obviously care about the animals as much as I do. I have recommended several people to them and will continue to do so in the future. Thank you SNAP for your continued efforts in healing the sick and helping to control the number of unwanted animals with your spay/neuter program.

I just want to say how incredible this organization is. I am single and cannot afford huge vet bills. This organization's extemely reasonable costs - a fraction of for profit vet costs - allowed me to get the two cats I have spayed. I found the staff there to be personable and professional. Also, the ability to schedule spays almost any day of the week is wonderful! Thank you, SNAP, for being there!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the spaying of my two cats - they came through the procedure in excellent condition.

To date, I have brought 10 feral, or homeless cats and kittens to the SNAP Clinic to be spayed/neutered and vaccinated. Before becoming aware of the affordable services SNAP provides, I was only able to afford taking 1 cat to my pet's veterinarian every few months. A few months is more than enough time for a kitten to become sexually mature, and that litter of kittens, as cute as they are, compounds the problem! All of the cats and kittens came through their surgeries very well, and recovered quickly! SNAP makes the process of making an appointment, either by phone or on-line, drop off and pick-up, very organized and easy. SNAP has made my desire to help these abandoned kitties, live a more healthy and longer life, a reality!!!! This organization is vital to both the community and the felines it serves!!!!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Seeing the cats that have been spayed/neutered and vaccinated........THRIVE!!!!!....but, not reproduce!!!!! The first step to NO KILL....is NO BIRTH!!!!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Research better ways to communicate to the public, of events, fundraisers, mobile clinic schedules, and proper operation of feral cat/ live trap cages.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

They really do care about the animals!!!!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Efficient, knowledgeable, patient, and understanding!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Probably end the pet overpopulation problem in Houston, Texas, and worldwide!!!

Ways to make it better...

I would have been aware of how wonderful their veterinary and volunteer staff really were......sooner!!!

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Financial, as is with all worthy non-profit organizations!

One thing I'd also say is that...

If I were a wealthy person, this is definitely a worthy cause, along with many others, I would donate generously!!!

I really appreciate the work they do with the mobile unit that provides free services to low income households. If it wasn't for SNAP, I wouldn't have been able to get my dog neutered. He's a large dog (which is more expensive to do) and was starting to get aggressive. Being able to use SNAP kept us from having to get rid of our dog, because the neutering totally took that aggressiveness away. My daughter loves that dog like crazy, and would have been heartbroken if we'd have had to give him up for his behavior. So now we have a happy dog!! And they took excellent care of him, and the surgery was top notch. I don't think anyone could have done better!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

going to the mobile clinic to get my dog neutered.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

somehow find them a lot more money so they could help more people who can't afford to get their animal neutered.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

that they are the only place to get a low cost, quality neutering job done.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

staff that signs people in, and veterinary assistants that get people's animals back to them after the surgery is done.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

help so much with the over-abundance of kittens and puppies born every day when people can't afford to get their animal neutered and just toss it out instead.

Ways to make it better...

I had known a little more about the process before getting signed in, before I went there. But I read that they have recently changed the process to make it easier for everyone.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

lack of money to keep going and expanding.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I live in the country, and a lot of cats keep showing up on my doorstep. My Mother and I have taken about 10 cats to the mobile clinic over the years to be spayed or nuetered. If it hadn't been for S.N.A.P. there would be many more hundreds of stray cats in my area. I could not have helped keep the number of births down on strays, if it wasn't for SNAP, as I live paycheck to paycheck. This is a GREAT organization! Wished they were able to have more clinics, as the stay cats still keep showing up on my doorstep.

My mother and I took our Animals to SNAP's Rabies/microchip event. The people there were very quick, efficient, organized and also extremely nice. Between the two of us we had 5 animals and we got in and out in less than 20 minutes paying only $25 per animal! It was a great price and I walked out relieved my animals hadn't been put through more stress than was necessary. I highly recommend them to all animals owners!
