My husband’s Aunt began having seizures at approximately 18 months old; this was the probable cause of the mental retardation. She was institutionalized at age 17 (in 1964) and spent nearly 30 years at Western Center State Facility before it was closed. Thankfully, other state agencies were encouraged to visit Western Center to interview the residents to see if any qualified for their program assistance. Aunt Kathy was one of those lucky residents. She went to live in one of Southwinds' group homes February 2, 1994. Aunt Kathy has lived with the same three housemates for many years and her caregivers are amazing women. They truly have become Aunt Kathy’s family. Aunt Kathy goes five days a week to a retirement day program. She makes Crafts to enhance her fine motor skills and participates in group activity sessions. Her program is run through Mercy Behavioral Health. As a family member of a current resident in Southwinds' care, I am happy to recommend Southwinds, Inc. Written with kind regards, Elizabeth M. Duhan
