Review from JustGive

I am unemployed, no health insurance, and with no transportation. I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer but saw no way I could get treatment without having the money to pay for it. My doctor had a list of organizations that he thought could help so I began calling them. None returned my calls with the exception of these people. They listened to me, asked questions about my condition and financial situation, and then provided me with names and telephone numbers of local hospitals they thought had a good chance of helping me out. The first one I called, Broward Health, did have a plan for patients in my situation and I was able to set up an appointment to have my case reviewed and I was accepted. I had a great team that worked closely with me all through treatment and while I am still feeling the effects of the therapy, it was successful and I owe it all to that first phone call to these people at the South Florida Cancer Association.

My wife and I live in Port St. Lucie. A lady she knows has her granddaughter living with her. Her granddaughter is only 16. The girl had a problem they thought might be breast cancer. The grandmother called everywhere and finally reached the South Florida Cancer Association in Miami. The director of the organization himself drove north from Miami to Port St. Lucie, over two hours and picked up my wife's friend and her granddaughter and took them back south to Ft. Lauderdale, another hour or so, for a mammogram. Something happened and they didn't get it. My wife said the girl was devastated but her friend told her the man took them to dinner at a nice restaurant and actually had the girl laughing and smiling. He then drove them back to Port St. Lucie. She said he was absolutely the greatest. They did get the girl checked out and it turned out to be nothing to be worried about but she told my wife that if either of us ever needed help to call these people and whatever we needed, they would see we got it. She said for the girl that was what made her feel better, knowing that she had someone she could call on for help who would be there for her. She said it meant a lot to both of them. I haven't called this organization or met their director but from the story she told my wife I know that if either of us ever do need them they can be counted on to help. You hear a lot about what this or that organization will do for you but these people don't just talk the talk, they walk the walk and it's why I'm writing this review. These are good people and they deserve recognition. God Bless Them!

I was diagnosed with breast cancer. My husband and I are retired and on a fixed income and treatment costs were going to be more than we could handle. I went online and found the South Florida Cancer Association. I called and spoke to Mr. Dutton. We talked about my cancer and he was very kind and reassuring. He told me about his own battle with cancer and it was very inspirational. He has been great in helping us with the medical costs, and for me personally, he made me feel that I can handle what I am going through and if I need someone to talk to, he is there. I can't say enough about how wonderful he and his organization has been for us.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

that I was left with the feeling that I could deal with my cancer and if I needed someone to talk to, they were there.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

absolutely wonderful. Mr. Dutton could not do enough for me and my husband and I found his own story inspirational.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

certainly help a lot more people.

I found something that I was very worried about but did not have the money to see a doctor or to have a test. I contacted the South Florida Cancer Association. They worked with me to get me into a program that allowed me to see a doctor and to get tested without having to pay a lot of money. It turned out to be nothing for which I am very thankful. They are very nice people. God Bless Them.‎
