As a volunteer at the soup kitchen, I have been pleased at the level of respect to the clients that are served. There is a very strong emphasis on compassion, respect, and recognizing the worth of each individual. I do find that the organization of volunteers is very haphazard: too many people versus not enough, reliability of who will be there and how to notify management if not coming, what jobs people are assigned to and what that job entails. But that aside, it manages to work out fine and the paid staff seem to be both competent and approachable.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

not sure how to answer this

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

For volunteers in dining room: make it easier to have a set schedule, to change it, and to notify mgmt when not coming. Have volunteer tasks clearly defined so that a new person can step in easily. Have a go-to person for questions, issues. Have a way to immediately notify a security person when a situation looks problematic.

I have been a supporter of St. Vincent de Paul Society in Oakland for decades. I have followed their work in supporting the folks on the margins of society in my city, and I am very impressed with the work they do in feeding the hungry, helping those in need of shelter and clothing, assisting those who need jobs, and helping the elderly in our city. St. Vincent de Paul is a vital organization, especially in these difficult economic times. I hope their support increases.
