I was delighted to be able to assist the SoSA personnel in a gleaning experience last summer. The event was scheduled to glean blueberries at a nearby farm. The SoSA personnel were there early and the event was well planned and organized. The most exciting part of the gleaning event was knowing that the blueberries were being delivered to a food pantry that very day and would help immediately to feed those who were in need! In the fall, I was able to witness a potato drop. The speed which the potatoes were sorted, bagged, and picked up by feeding agencies was incredible! Once again, those sweet potatoes were on hungry families tables that day! What a blessing to witness such dedicated service to feeding those in need. Thank you SoSA for leading the way to feeding those in need.

The Great!
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... extremely dedicated to the cause of feeding the hungry in our country.
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... raising funds in a period of recession.

SOSA is a weel run orgianization ehlping to bring farmers and the hungry together. I run an agrucultural research station and we have been able to produce over 10,000 lbs of produce for the hungry in our community. SOSA plays a very important role on our station by picking fruit and vegetables that if left, would cause disease problems in the fields. All of the voulunteers are committed to getting the produce out of the field and to the homes or agency where it is greatly needed. It is good to know that we can provide a service to the communtiy by the research that is being done and by proving the proceeds for or work to the hungry.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... The response from people in the community on how their work and the foood that was provided was an answered prayed for them.
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... Getting volunteers. The more people willing to help the better it is for all.

SoSA is great. We are a state agricultural research station that works with SoSA. Over the past 5 years SoSA has gleaned well over 100,000 lbs.of fruits and vegetables from our facility. It has been win win for everyone. We allow gleaners to gather food for those in need at a savings to the state. The gleaners in turn help us by harvesting fruits and vegetables that must be removed from plantings. And it's good PR. Everyone where I work is supportive of SoSA's efforts and word has spread. More research stations across the state are on board and have SoSA glean their fields. We've have a great working relationship with SoSA. They're good(will) folks.

  • I've seen the results of this organization in... Arranging for the harvest of fruits and vegetables.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... Being associated with people who give of their time to care for others.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... They come in all shapes and sizes, old and young alike and diverse background. It's not a glamorous job. It's hot, you sweat, get tired, stay stooped over for long periods of time. They have a lot of heart.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... I wish I could say feed the world. But 10 million bucks would help them develop a much needed infrastructure. For example, the crops are perishable and need to be handled properly.
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... They need help. With the economy there is more demand than they can provide.

Society of St. Andrew here in the Asheville, NC area is tops! I had a bumper crop of apples last year, and Bill Walker brought a crew to pick my trees. I'm not a commercial grower, so I never could have picked them myself when the apples were at their prime for eating. My apples were put to good use with our local food bank and a local church meal program in a very impoverished area. This humanitarian effort closed the loop, getting food to those who really need it. I've become a regular donor and couldn't be happier. The Society of St. Andrew is amazingly well organized. They stayed in touch with me by email and phone, and were absolutely on time. Bill, the Director, follow-up with me and told me where my apples went both years. I feel like I am part of a team effort, and learned a trick about making the apples easier for the picking process from watching The Society pick the first year. This spring, I will have the trees pruned to get bigger fruit. We are very blessed to have Society of St. Andrew do the work of gleaning fields and trees to provide food for those who need it most. It's a great organization!

  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... working with people who share my values about donating food feed the hungry. I did not have connections to get my apples to the food bank. Society of St. Andrew made it happen!

  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... getting the word out to non-commercial growers that they can make sure that extra crops can be put to good use. I don't think the general public knows what a great community service The Society of St. Andrew performs.

This fall was our first experience with SOSA. I had great fun and a deep sense that I was contributing to my community. My children were able to help too. The experience provided them with a way to help someone in need. It gave me many opportunities to show them how fortunate we are. There were many ways this was a worthwhile experinece. I am very glad to have been introduced to the program. Bill Walker was welcoming and helpful.

The Great!
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... That I could help someone in need and my Unitarian Universalist Congregation could work side by side with people from other churches and denominations.
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... I knew the apple picking was off the ground. One person in my group had diffuculty doing this and may not have come if he knew that would be the situation.
