Society of Singers granted me a scholarship in 2007 and 2008 for vocal performance while I was in Graduate School. This money was HUGELY helpful and it was so refreshing to find an organization like this. SOS was easy a pleasure to communicate with, always friendly and helpful. A really fantastic non profit, I hope they continue to grow and help the music community thrive!

The Great!

My husband and I are so thankful to SOS. In a time of serious financial difficulty, the group came to our aid. A couple of contracts that my husband had with opera houses this fall were canceled at the last minute because the houses declared bankruptcy and closed. With two young children, we were scrambling to find jobs to make it through. The help that SOS gave to us enabled us to get through this rough time. We will forever be thankful to SOS.

SOS helped me in my greatest need. In one year I lost my son and both my parents. My grief and crying caused vocal cord spasms and I was unable to sing, which meant I was unable to work for a year. Without their support and help for me I don't know what I would have done. I had never asked for help before in my 40+ years in the music business, and they handled my request for help with great sensitivety and care, without making me feel any worse than I already felt, for having to ask for help. Today I sing their praises for getting me the toughest time in my life. Thank you SOS!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Well, if there was a way to "enjoy" the situation I was in, it was the contact I made with the people, getting to know them over the phone and emails and feeling like I had made a new friend.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

The staff was professional, knowledgable and helpful at their job. And cared about how to get the most for me in my personal situation.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Match the heart of the people of the SOS.

SOS helped me through a couple of years ago when everything financial fell apart - lost my home, car, etc. SOS paid off what was left of my bills to utility companies, phone, and some miscellaneous stuff that would enable me to re-use these services once back on my feet. Their help enabled me to "pick myself up, dust myself off, and start all over again." I am now one of the working few making money again at my profession - music! Praise god for SOS. Working with people like Wendy made the process wonderful. she is just an amazing person representing an amazing organization.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

1995 and 2009. In 95 I volunteered because I believed in what they are doing. In 2009, much to my surprise, I needed their help. They were there for me.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Add more nationwide chapters to reach more people and have more fundraising events in places other than LA and NY, although I like those places. Las Vegas, Chicago, Florida, and other places also have a concentration of retired singers.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the people. There's no People Like Show People. They are some of the most loving caring individuals on the planet. SOS is all about show people helping show people.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

wonderful! From Ginny M down to Wendy. All are absolutely the best.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

help many more singers in need. We have no residual income as in other parts of show biz. The singer provides the world with its best and we get very little recompense and NO residual income as the artist bringing a piece of music to life.

Ways to make it better...

If I could have returned the money and added 6 zeros after the amount. I will be donating way more than I received over the next year. I am truly grateful.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

financial as always.

One thing I'd also say is that...

SOS could use some over the Top national publicity but that costs money. Money makes money. We need to be more visible to be able to reach the households that would love to contribute if they only knew about SOS and what they do.

After losing several opera singing jobs -- sustaining a head/neck injury and losing our home - my husband and I were desperate to keep our apartment rent current. We were three months behind and I had medical bills that we couldn't keep up with. I found SOS through the internet and reached Andrea who was an immediate friend to me. Her manner was gentle and caring and she laid out a specific plan of action of how they might be able to help with one month's rent and then sent me to other agencies to offer further help. They fully suppport singers unlike many of our own family members. As singers we must create and inspire others with our talents -- that's what we do! We were able to go ahead with the New York showcase of our original operatic play and are going forward with our dreams---thank you so much SOS! God bless you and those that support your important work!!!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

receiving financial help for rent in a crisis. They also directed me to two other agencies for further help. I also had several phone conversations with SOS telling them my story and received gentle and caring support rather than condemnation! Thank you!!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Increase the amount of assistance available to those in crisis.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

See above.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Caring, competent, very involved and pro-active.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Do so much more to sustain and assist singers who are a vital part of society and culture -- more now than ever.

Ways to make it better...

It was a wonderful experience but they have a low limit of financial help available.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Funding so that they can do more!!!

One thing I'd also say is that...

Because of SOS' help we were able to go ahead with the NY showcase of my original show to standing ovation and cheers. I received a fan ltr from a woman in CT who thanked me for taking away her cares and bringing beauty into her life for two hours.

Five years ago when a tree hit our house and demolished three rooms eight windows and a door, and most of our roof. S.O.S. Were the first ones to send us help. We had no insurance and no money for repairs. We were still struggling when my husband died in Jan. 15 2010.But at least now the house is livable even though there is a lot more to be done. without the help of S.O.S.we would not have been able to stay in our house and we had no where to go. Thank You S.O.S. Amy Lyons and the late Bill Lyons

Wendy and the entire staff at Society of Singers, were amazing, they came through for me with minimal effort on my part, and helped to bring me through a time, that I was having a great deal of difficulty managing on my own. I will always be grateful to SoS for the help that you have given me. I was always treated with respect and dignity, which is something that meant a great deal to me personally. I am so thankful for this organization, and everything they do for Singers. Sincerely, John Cannizzaro

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Continue to help people on a wider range, by implementing educational programs and staff, that probably cannot be afforded at this time prior to the 10 million bucks.

I did not have to ask for assistance to begin with, however due to the fact that I have, I could not imagine better hands to be dropped in.

Funding.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I look at my personal dealings with SoS as a sort of small miracle.

These wonderful people, and I mean the best of Humanity, are responsible for keeping my phone, electricity, and water in my home. Not to mention helping me pay rent for the troubled month I had. When I can, I will graciously donate my time and funds to them. Many thanks, and many Blessings to SOS.

My experience with Society of Singers was like "water to dry land". They stepped in and helped me when I needed it the most. As a professional artist, speaker/workshop facilitator who has made an amazing living doing what I love to do for 11 years, it's quite painful and humbling when things slow down to a screeching halt, there's no income to rely on, and all the reserves are gone. Society of Singers showed me respect and compassion, never making me feeling like I was asking for a hand-out, but reached out to me as if I were a family member. It is my pleasure to give them this review as well as make a commitment to donate to them as often as possible as a way of showing my appreciation, and giving back what was so generously given to me in my time of need
