Slide Ranch is a magical place that transports the entire family. The physical location is stunning, the staff is exceptional and the ranch itself provides such a needed and thoroughly enjoyable opportunity to reconnect with the natural world. My husband, 7 year old daughter, 3 year old son and I love Slide Ranch!
The Great!
- I've seen the results of this organization in... teaching children the connection between nature and food by making meals using ingredients from the garden and eggs from the hens.
- What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... everything. The garden, the staff, the location, the activities. It's wonderful.
- The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... exceptional, unique people.
Ways to make it better!
- In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... obviously funding (and possibly the National Park Service).

My family loves Slide Ranch. The chance to take my "City" kid to a farm near by is priceless. Goats, plants, learning about farming, and a chance to participate and learn real skills (spinning yarn, baking, milking)such great life long experience. I wish we could live at the ranch it is a beautiful place to visit.
The Great!
- I've seen the results of this organization in... My son talked about the Ranch for weeks. Now when we are planning weekend trips, he always asks to go to places were there are animals (particularly goats!)
- What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... The people who work there are friendly and responsive to "client" concerns.
- The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Knowledgable, friendly, smiled alot, very, very helpful.
- If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Provide amazing experiences (over nights, weekend camping trips, after school opportunities, family get always) for all the city bound kids, teens, and adults who have never had a pleasure of spending time on a working farm.
Ways to make it better!
- My experience would have been better if... The farm were bigger! More space.
- If I had to make changes to this organization, I would… Hold more open house events for the community.
- In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... Money, money, money of course, as well as fighting the apathetic feelings that Americans seem to have toward the farming life and handmade products, or hands on experiences. Also the fight to get people off of and away from days filled with too much media driven video entertainment (T.V., video, computers).
- One thing I'd also say is that... Slide Ranch is part of the fabric of the Bay Area. It protects a beautiful piece of the coast from development, it provides a great escape from the claustrophobia of urban life, it is a reminder that life is more than fast forward, mass consumption. That with a chance to slow down, stop, and look around you can see, feel, taste and hear life.
My 5 year old son and 2 year old daughter absolutely love Slide Ranch and talk about going there all the time. We have done the family campout, Spring Fling and Family Farm Days. All are really well run, very engaging for the children and the location is spectacular. My kids love milking and petting the friendly goats, making bread and sitting by the campfire at the campout. If we could go every weekend, we would!!

- What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... The great counselors.
- The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Amazing! Truly engaged with the children.
- If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Open more slide ranches
Ways to make it better!
- If I had to make changes to this organization, I would… Market Slide Ranch to more people.
- In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... parking
- One thing I'd also say is that... Go to Slide Ranch and experience this amazing gift.
Stunning retreat. My 4 and 3 year old sons talk about their visits there often. The staff was knowledgeable, patient and kind. My boys gathered eggs from the chicken coop, milked goats and picked vegetables and herbs from the garden. They were so proud watching us eat up the vegetable fritatta they had so much fun preparing on the outdoor stove.
The Great!
- I've seen the results of this organization in... how beautiful the land is kept
- What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... how much I learn about nature and the environment
- The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... enthusiastic and informative
- If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... enable more students and children from all over to experience the beauty of nature and the gifts that are worth preserving
Ways to make it better!
- If I had to make changes to this organization, I would… create internships for urban students
I was a Board Member & I was a teacher and staff person and then a Board member.

I was a teacher intern, then Operations Director and finally Board member of Slide Ranch over the period of almost six years. The benefits to me personally of being involved ranged from the emotional reward of seeing the wonder on the faces of youth from Oakland who had never before seen the ocean, to the profound experience of slaughtering a chicken with my own hands for food, to the political growth I was exposed to in understanding the importance of local food systems and joining the Marin Food Policy Council.
The Great!
- I've seen the results of this organization in... the enrichment of the teachers and staff who have lived there, and whose lives it changed, and in the excitement and wonder of the children who have visited.
- What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... The combination of experiential, hands-on education with the practice and theory of how food, the earth and our culture are interrelated.
- The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Compassionate, committed, open-hearted, and smart.
- If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Redevelop the facilities to continue to serve the Bay Area for another century.
Ways to make it better!
- In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... how to maintain the vibrant and transformative program with infrastructure that is failing and limited.
