First, as a listener to this wonderful, family-friendly interactive program. Then, as the community relations person for a small non-profit cultural organization, who has always found in SLB a ready ear (and voice) for our programs and projects.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... finding a welcome in the studio as a representative of the St. David's Society, a small cultural group promoting awareness and appreciation of Welsh history and culture. SLB is a great boon to small organizations like ours.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... Larry has been generous with airtime for our programs, and projects, especially our sponsorship of the Welsh classroom in the Cathedral of Learning on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Larry Berger (host) and Rikki Berger (producer)
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Be much better known in the community, build its music library, and maybe have more support staff. Rikki is a multitasker par excellence!
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... It's on a relatively obscure radio station. It would be wonderful if more people knew about it.
  • One thing I'd also say is that... It's always a pleasure to deal with SLB.

For the past ten years SLB Radio has helped promote fundraising efforts for the homeless shelter at which I work. St. Joseph House of Hospitality has a yearly bluegrass benefit concert and SLB radio has had musicians from that concert perform on the Saturday morning prior to that concert. Not only does this help promote the concert, but it also keeps the issue of homelessness and efforts to alleviate homelessness in the public's awareness. Also, as a musician who has performed on SLB, the opportunity to perform on live radio is an experience that is truly unique and gratifying. SLB Radio is a real asset to our community in its promotion of social awareness and promotion of the performing arts.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... members of the public stating they heard about our concert on the radio.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... the ability to promote a benefit concert and the opportunity to play music on live radio.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... excellent in their professionalism and their concern for our work with the homeless.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... revolutionize local mass media due to the positive effect SLB Radio would have on the community.
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... Adequate funding.

My 7th and 8th grade students have worked with the Saturday Light Brigade (SLB) for past two years on an outstanding project entitled Allegheny Voices. This entire project came into being after a casual conversation I had with Larry Berger and Jeff Barron of SLB. I was mistaken that our conversation was casual. A few weeks later, Larry and Jeff presented an outlined plan which included the core ideas of our conversation and proposed how we can expand upon it by working with the Andy Warhol Museum. I was blown away. SLB spearheaded the task of organizing this project and provided a variety of training and technical resources to our students throughout the process. The trainings included everything from interviewing techniques, to proper use the digital equipment and to editing digital media, just to name a few. They also opened the doors of SLB for our students to conduct their interviews in the studio. What I found most amazing was that while SLB was working with our students on the Allegheny Voices project, they were concurrently facilitating other unique educational projects throughout the city. The magnitude of opportunities SLB provides our community to expose our youth to new experiences, does not seem possible with such a small full-time staff. But after working with them, these past two years I can attest that their dedication and enthusiasm to provide unique opportunities to children is contagious… which makes it possible for them to impact so many.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... watching them bridge the gap between generations.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... thier flexibility with our schedule.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... sincere and dedicated to their mission.
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... we could've had the technology at our school to align with the software they trained our students to use.

Committed listener and occasional caller. I like personal, local approach and the interesting local music groups that are featured. Great music all around.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... exposure to new music groups and community events.
Ways to make it better!
  • If I ran this organization, I would... have it more accessible in other locations.

To interact in person & on the radio, for over 10 yrs., with all three of our children. This is the most family freindly, iteractive media source, that educates the masses, thru fun games, music, conversation, and caring about people!

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... seeing the enjoyment they bring my children and me,when they aknowledge them on the radio.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... always polite, kind , and genuinely happy to talk to us.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... buy a stronger transmitter and entertain and educate people in 30 states and parts of Canada!!
Ways to make it better!
  • One thing I'd also say is that... if they were on the air more , I would gladly spend more days of the week listening to them!
