I have received several small grants during the last 8 years. First, funds from SI were used to evaluate the effect of an oil spill on manatees in Ciénaga Paredes, Colombia. Second, a small grant helped to develop the project Research and conservation of manatees at the Orinoco River Basin (Colombia). It yielded two BSc thesis and my own MSc thesis. Lately, I received another big help from this organization to complete the field work of my PhD thesis, in order to understand the process involved in manatee habitat selection in Mexico. Sirenian International has been very important to support research and conservation of manatees in Latin America. It is specially relevant for young researchers and students. My experience with SI has been always positive and friendly.
The Great!
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
the growing of my own research. They helped me to make real a lot of expectatives about my studies on manatees.

I've been involved with Sirenian since its inception, I was a board member for a while, am on the advisory council, used their listserv many times, have collaborated with research projects they have sponsored, was one of the organizers of a workshop on sirenian MPA's they helped organize and write a successful proposal to fund. This is an amazing grassroots organization that creates global community out of a diverse group of conservation-oriented scientists!

I have known Dr. Caryn Self-Sullivan for a number of years as she performed her doctoral research on manatees in Belize. Caryn also started a number of years ago a fine organization, Sirenian International, which brought outreach and awareness of sirenian conservation issues to the forefront of the public eye. Through that program thousands of people have been educated about the status and problems confronting the endangered sirenians worldwide. Dr. Self-Sullivan and her organization also provided research funding to many young scientists in efforts to garner interest on sirenian issues on a regional scale. Those efforts have helped advance conservation measures to protect populations and habitats of these threatened species. Sirenian International is to be commended.
