I first visited Shy Wolf this past January with my sister. We were taken on a tour with Nancy, who has a special gift, and unending love for all animals. We sat with an artic fox, and were kissed by several wolves! We gained a whole new appreciation for the animals. We learned many facts about the wolves, including what gentle animals they really are. We heard horrible stories of abuse, but were able to see that with love, patience, kind words, some hugs and kisses, these amazing animals learn to trust again. I have since visited 3 more times, and have already booked my 4th visit. Shy Wolf is a wonderful wonderful place.

I first visited the Shy Wolf Sanctuary four years ago, and was stunned to find myself face to face with real wolves. The thrill of being close enough to have a wolf lick my face and the experience of learning the personal histories of the anumals in the sanctuary have made it a place we visit every year when we are in Naples. It remains the best kept secret that city has to offer. It is unique in so many ways, not least of which is the reliance on donations and the work of volunteers to keep it going. It is truly a place driven by the love and commitment of its founder and the people who know and care for the animals and want others to share the joy of knowing them, too.

When you first walk through the gate ate Shy Wolf, it causes you to stop in amazement. For at that moment there are many sets sets of eyes on you watching in curiosity and observation. Unlike what we have all been led to believe about wolves these animals are beautiful caring animals in need of care, socialization, understanding....and love.
Most have been abused in one way...or many ways by man. We the volunteers try to undo some of that and make their current life as good as is possible.
I have been a vol for about 8 mos and the experiences I have had will remain with for the remainder of my life.
You cannot come away unaffected by these creatures

ONE OF THE ONLY PLACES YOU WILL GET KISSES FROM A REAL LIVE WOLF. You'll learn so much you did not know about wolves & their relationships with other members of the pack. I first visited Shy Wolf in 2003 with my family. I fell in love with the animals on that visit and have been a volunteer whenever we are in Florida from the UK. The work done by Nancy & Kent Smith and all the volunteers is amazing, their devotion to all the animals second to none. All money donated by visitors goes to the care of the sanctuary & the inmates.
A MUST VISIT WHEN IN THE NAPLES AREA.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

animals who have been so badly treated by humans come to the sanctuary in a bad state and watching the change in them as they receive the love & care given, recover their health and learn to trust again is amazing & very rewarding.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

help with the move which Shy Wolf are trying to raise funds for to provide bigger & better accommodations & more opportunities to provide educational facilities.

From the moment you walk through the door at Shy Wolf Sanctuary, you know you're in a special place. Squirrels run up and down the trees and birds fly back and forth in play, but you know you've stumbled upon something amazing when you hear the welcoming howl of the wolves. There is no other sound like it. This is not a zoo. The animals have personal relationships with the owners of the facility (Nancy and Kent) and all the volunteers who spend the time to bond with them. Visitors even have the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the wolves. Shy Wolf is a place where the animals are loved and respected and treated with the care that all animals deserve. I am a volunteer and can honestly say from the bottom of my heart you do not want to miss the chance to visit Shy Wolf Sanctuary! - Judy Rakocinski

I've seen wolves that have been abused learn to trust people more. I've also seen how Shy Wolf has given back to the community by bringing the wolves and the community together. Just recently, Shy Wolf brought a couple of the wolves to a nursing home where I also volunteer. The impact the wolves had on the residents was priceless!

help them get more funds so they could move this operation to a larger facility to be able to care for the animals even better!

I started volunteering at Shy Wolf Sanctuary during the beginning of summer 2011. Though it is sad to learn about the abuse situations that some of the Shy Wolf residents come from, it is amazing to earn a wolf's trust and form a nuturing relationship. The volunteers I have met have such a special heart!
I would recommend anyone to schedule a tour of Shy Wolf and learn more about these beautiful animals!

Although I live in another state I knew I had to do what I could to help this organization. I am a donor and a volunteer. I was so impressed with the founder Nancy Smith and her volunteers’ devotion to the wolves and other animal at the sanctuary. Many of these animals were abused and she heals not only their bodies but also their psychological scars. I wish I lived closer so I could do more to help this organization.

I have been volunteering with Shy Wolf for almost 3 years now. I first discovered the organization on the cover of a Florida magazine and knew that I had to go. My first visit was all that I had hoped for and more. The interaction with the "residents" was incredible. Nancy Smith, founder, is so knowledgeable about wolves and the other animals at the sanctuary. Since becoming a volunteer, I have been able to work closely with the wolves and have been able to watch so many visitors learn about the animals we rescue and gain new understanding about out misunderstood friends. Visitors always leave with a greater appreciation of the wolves and other animals and, I hope, a greater sense of responsibility to the other creatures who inhabit the world with us. We all have a purpose, Nancy is fond of saying, and our visitors leave with the understanding that all creatures have a purpose that is equally important to our own. If you are going to be in the Naples, Florida area, please take the time to schedule a visit (in advance as our groups are kept small to ensure everyone's visit is enjoyable and intimate) and share this experience with your family. You won't be disappointed!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

watching visitors who had been taught that wolves were vicious creatures learn that they are gentle, family oriented creatures who have been maligned in stories and movies creating fear. Wolves are an essential part of the ecosystem and need to be protected, not hunted. Our visitors leave with a greater appreciation of wolves and the other animals we care for.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

want to provide our animals with more space. We are in the process of doing this as we have purchased 20 acres to build a world class facility. We are now in the fund raising process so that our animals and visitors can have an even more enjoyable experience.

What one change could this group make that would improve your volunteer experience?

I love volunteering here. I sometimes wish our volunteers would treat this like they would a job commitment and let us know if they were not going to be able to come in one day. Other than that, I wouldn't change anything. It is a wonderful experience.

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

I have gained greater knowledge about wolves and made many lifelong friends of all ages.

How did this volunteer experience make you feel?

I feel at peace each time I enter the sanctuary. This experience is something I look forward to each week.
