Founded in 1978, Shakespeare & Company aspires to create a theatre of unprecedented excellence rooted in the classical ideals of inquiry, balance and harmony; a company that performs as the Elizabethans did -- in love with poetry, physical prowess and the mysteries of the universe. With a core of over 150 artists, the company performs Shakespeare, generating opportunities for collaboration between actors, directors and designers of all races, nationalities and backgrounds. S&Co provides original, in-depth, classical training and performance methods. S&Co also develops and produces new plays of social and political significance. Shakespeare & Company's education programs inspire a new generation of students and scholars to discover the resonance of Shakespeare's truths in the everyday world, demonstrating the influence that classical theatre can have within a community.

Role: Board Member
Rating: 5 stars

I have been involved with S&Co for 30+ years first as a patron later as an employee and most recently as a board member. i have always felt the passion from every member of the company whether they were taking tickets or directing a show or on stage. everyone seems to be happy to be there and this always comes through in the many performances i have seen over the years.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the schools program. i saw kids blossom with just a 45 minute workshop. the directors brought the best out of these kids even though their contact was brief. i also saw the kids interested in something that some thought was not there.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

As a more than ten year member of the Board at Shakespeare & Co., I have participated and observed the remarkable contributions this organizations have offered to Western Massachussetts as well as nationally. The company has participated in training, education, and performances affecting people of all ages. Training at multiple levels from professional actors to young (early teens and high school age) perople include week-end and monthly intensive endeavors. Education involving more than 45,000 high school students in Western Massachussetts allowing for November performances by area high school students attended by cheering students and parents. Performances, including Shakespeare plays as well as avant guarde plays, creative romps, free performances and others available to the entire community. The calibre of performances, as evidenced by reviews in the NY Times, The Wall Street Journal and local newspapers have been notably outstanding. Finally, the committment, character, idealism of the organization is unparalled.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
