Having grown up in the area around Shakespeare & Company, the Company has been a major part of my personal growth and experience. Beyond providing stellar performances to the community - local and beyond - Shakespeare & Company's educational outreach programs have had an enormous effect on the area's youth, myself included. Through programs like the Fall Festival of Shakespeare and Shakespeare & Young Company, Shakespeare & Company immerses local students in the beauty of Shakespeare's text and the thrill of performance. The most amazing thing about Shakespeare & Company is the way in which is strikes a balance between creating remarkable art and teaching others to create it as well.

I am the parent of a lucky 15 year old boy who has the opportunity to work with Shakespeare and Co. personnel each fall to produce an adapted Shakespeare play for the Fall Festival of Shakespeare. In addition, before my son reached high school, I worked as a volunteer at the National Endowment for the Arts during a panel meeting discussing granting funds to various performing arts festivals around the nation. The proposal discussing the 20 year old Fall Festival of Shakespeare was remarkable in the way it engages the teen-agers to make the play happen. Nothing else being considered that day gave the kids that kind of active role. This is a great program, run by a great company!

I attended several weekend intensives in San Francisco which not only strengthened my skill in performing Shakespeare, but inspired me to produce and perform several plays: an all-female Merchant of Venice ( in conjunction with Woman's Will) and small-cast Macbeth (at the Loading Zone in Santa Rosa). I noticed a huge improvement in my vocal ability in performing outdoor Shakespeare after studying with Virgina Ness Ray, a teacher at Shakespeare and Co. Within a semester of her class I went from a rather weak Tatania one season to a clear and funny Olivia the next. Shakespeare and Co teaches the connection of language to body and breath which are so crucial and enlivening for performers and audience; I felt the language resonate in my bones as I performed: my breath supporting and opening my voice. Shakespeare and Co.'s teachers and coaches are committed, encouraging and inspiring. I attribute the joy and success of my experiences directly to Shakespeare and Co.'s excellent technique and training.

As an educator with 44 years of experience in teaching high school English, I have participated in countless professional development workshops and meetings. No professional development has come close to matching the powerful positive impact of the programs offered by Shakespeare and Company. Not only was my own teaching enlivened and deepened by exposure to the talented and dedicated actors of the company, but my entire school district was transformed into Shakespeare enthusiasts. The first daylong workshop I attended gave me a wealth of new tools with which to teach the plays and, more importantly, made the sense of "play" a key part of my approach to introducing students to Shakespeare. The risk-taking that Kevin Coleman demonstrated and encouraged in the little band of educators was a gift that carried on to my students as I asked them to go far beyond just reading the text into living the emotions of the characters. Then came my opportunity to participate in a month-long workshop "Shakespeare and the Rose Theater." That was truly transformative for me. I met and questioned world-renowned scholars in the field; I struggled along with my peers to memorize lines; I went on stage and felt the pain of a father losing his son to Macbeth's tyranny and the bawdiness of a tavernkeeper's wife who entertained Henry V. I returned to school ready to lead the entire district in a Renaissance festival, the centerpiece of which was an in-house performance by "Shakespeare and Company." An entire public high school in rural upstate New York dressed themselves in handmade Renaissance costumes, ate a banquet of authentic foods hosted by a queen and king, performed contradances, and enjoyed jesters and jousting matches. The information, the enthusiasm, and the attitudes I learned from the dedicated staff at "Shakespeare and Company" have, over the years, allowed me and other teachers like me to bring to life for thousands of students the ideas and emotions of Othello and Macbeth and Hamlet that otherwise would be mere words on a page. The tradition of inviting "Shakespeare and Company" to our district has continued, despite budget limitations, for over a decade, clear evidence that the entire district has been "hooked" by the Company's fine performances and student-friendly attitudes. I am deeply grateful for the experiences offered me by Shakespeare and Company and can only hope that others will be able to be similarly affected over the coming years.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

find them permanent funding so that the company could focus totally on their artistic output.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

that I can share my experiences with my students by helping them, too, to become active participants in Shakespeare, not mere readers of plays.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

totally committed to the program and eager to share with others. They believe in what they are doing and they absolutely love Shakespeare's work. Their enthusiasm is contagious.

Ways to make it better...

I lived closer to Lenox and could have attended more performances and activities there.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

lack of permanent and reliable funding. They agonize over the possibility that they might one day be unable to continue programs they so totally believe in.

Every summer a few lucky, hard-working and adventuresome teenagers are chosen to be part of the 9-week Shakespeare and Young Company project. Year after year, my husband, daughter and I have hosted a few of these young people in our home; nearly 30 of them by now. We watch them come a little unsure of themselves and wondering how they will fit into their new small group of fellow actors. Nine weeks later we see them transformed - confident, delighted with their new skills, and terribly sad to separate from their wonderful teachers, mentors and new friends. Thank heavens for FaceBook to stay connected! Every year we marvel again at the skills and dedication that Shakespeare and Company pours into this group - all in their busiest time of the year. Truly impressive and an exceptionally fine part of our local community. They are the best!!

My husband and I have been delighted with all of the performances we have seen over the years from Shakespeare & Company. We have happily taken many friends with us, and initiated our grandson to several of the William Shakespeare plays. We have particularly enjoyed the varied scope of the presentations, from "Golda" to "Othello", etc. We look forward to another great season, Summer 2010, and wish good luck to Tina Packer, and all the performers.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the cost is within every ones means, especially how they permit students to learn Shakespeare and a variety of theater.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

very helpful, and informative. In their former venue, Edith Wharton's, we had the ability to interact with the performers.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

enlarge, and give more performances. Teach more acting students.

Having participated in the Fall Festival of Shakespeare for the past two years, I have grown to love everything about Shakespeare & Company. The atmosphere inside Founder's theater during Fall Festival, could be described as a tidal wave of pure energy. From the moment the first actor steps on stage for the first show, the energy and support just emanates from every inch of the building, from the floor to the ceiling. Everything that happens both on the stage and in the audience is pure emotion. The Fall Festival of Shakespeare embodies everything that is good in human beings; it captures the very essence of human kindness.

I know hundreds of area students who have had the absolutely wonderful and life changing experience of Shakespeare Fall Festival, Riotous Youth and Young Company. The training, the professionalism of the people in all areas (coaching, costumes, sets) is outstanding. I know of shy awkward kids who were cajoled into helping with set build, then working back stage and then through continued encouragement tried out for roles and were on stage in numerous productions. By the end of high school they were playing leading roles. These change from beginning to end was astounding and the confidence that these experiences brought has been life changing.
