Shady has been a part of my life since its inception. Even when I am at my busiest, I always seem to find time to give to this organization. It's mission to make Shakespeare accessible to everyone has always been part of my own mission as a Dramaturg and professed Shakespeare addict. I adore seeing the reactions of audiences, especially with small children as they comprehend the language and leave with smiles on their faces. Watching new generations get the same joy from Shakespeare as I do is why I continue to be a part of this spectacular organization.

I have been involved with Shady Shakes as a volunteer for about 6 years. I sign up to help out with 2 or 3 things every year, and never miss a show. Each show is uniquely theirs while retaining everything Shakespeare and being highly entertaining and very well done. They are a pleasure to work with and work for. The Board of Directors and Creative Manager come up with incredible ideas each year that work and make Shakespeare feel right up to date! I love each and every one of the actors, crew and volunteers! They make it fun to come back year after year.

I started working with SSTC about 9 years ago, and absolutely love it - from the venue to the managing staff, volunteers and actors, it's an incredible experience and one not to be missed. How cool is it to be able to bring a picnic, enjoy the hidden gem known as Sanborn Skyline County Park, and enjoy FREE shakespeare in the park! I started out working on props, ushering and gradually made my way to Concessions Management; I also assist with other fundraising efforts throughout the year.

The shows themselves are very well directed and staged, costumes and lighting are awesome - everyone works very hard to make sure the audience enjoys each show. The settings they use for the shows really make shakespeare enjoyable and understandable to everyone.
For example, "Taming of the Shrew" was set in the the "old west"and it really made it easy for me to understand and I really enjoyed it. Last summer's production of "Much Ado" set in a WWII England was a hoot - especially with live music on stage and the actor's singing the standards of the day.

The shows presented by Shady Shakespeare Theatre Company should not be missed.

We usually attend one Shady Shakes performances a year and have always enjoyed ourselves. We donate enough to score the "Royal Seating" which offers comfort, a great view, plus free drinks and preferred parking -- it really is a great deal. But beyond the perks, the shows themselves are always a lot of fun and the company tries hard to bring the stories and characters alive in a way that a non-Shakespeare geek can understand and enjoy. It's especially gratifying to see kids from grade school to high school also having a good time at the shows.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

making the works of Shakespeare entertaining and comprehensible to people of all ages and backgrounds.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

being part of a totally volunteer-driven community to produce something meaningful that is a benefit to the local community.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

extremely hard working, talented, imaginative, and resourceful.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

get a permanent "home" for performances, storage, and rehearsals, as well as educational facilities.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every six months

I've been involved with Shady for 3 or 4 years, as a volunteer, as an attendee at shows and at events. I've helped with catering food, taking tickets and admission. I usually help with all of the major events put on through the year - 3 or 4 of them yearly. I have also donated money. I've found all of the people involved with Shady to be marvelous, passionate people really want to put on a tremendous show to share their love of Shakespeare. I'm pleased and proud to be a part of this wonderful organization.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Being a guest at the performances put on every summer in Sanborn Park. Shady puts on two different shows - two of Shakespeare's wonderful plays interpreted in different ways. They are always done professionally with tremendous talent and enthusiasm.

The plays are an entertaining performance set in an exquisite Shakespearean like atmoshpere (in the woods). You can't go wrong with one of their events! I think the overall awareness of the summer events would lead to large crowds.

I love working with this group. They are very professional in the way they handle everything, put on great shows, and love their patrons. I've been the Concessions Manager for 7 years and get great support from the management and other volunteers.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The closeness of the staff and actors, other volunteers and patrons. There is a great comradarie between the staff and actors, they care about you personally and help out wherever you need help.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

easy going, ready to pitch in with whatever needed to get done, friendly and work very hard to present wonderful shows each summer.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Rule the world! They would be able to get a rehearsal space, storage for props and costumes, and really take free shakespeare to the next level.

Ways to make it better...

The only downfall is having to tear down the concessions each night - If there was a way we could make a permanent area for concessions, it would make my life alot easier.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

continued funding to put on great shows, since contributions to the arts is dwindling.
