A Great non-profit that gives pregnant teens and their babies a safe and secure place to live. Seton Home has a proven record of helping teen moms overcome many of the obstacles of Parenting and helping them continue their education. This year they added a new Education Bldg. to help them obtain their goals and graduate from High School. The Staff and volunteers continue to be helpful in fund raising and continue to give generously. What a great place to work and volunteer.

In the many years that I have volunteered at Seton Home, I have seen many young girls progress from crisis to self-sufficiency. Seton Home teaches them to provide and care for their child, continue their own education, and learn to be caring and loving mothers. The spirituality program helps them to grow with God, and helps them to influence their children in a positive manner as well. I am proud to be a Seton Home Volunteer veteran.

Through working as a nurse in labor & delivery for some years, I sensed a growing desire to make a difference in the lives of teen moms and asked the Lord how I could join Him in this work. Shortly thereafter, at my church's women's retreat I met Tammy, Seton Home's director of development, and we rejoiced in this answer to my prayer. I attended volunteer training through a wonderful coordinator, Alexis, and was matched with a resident, Sophie.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

As I reflect on the progress of Sophie as well as many other girls I met at Seton Home that year, I realize what an impact Seton has on our community. What would have happened to them and their children if Seton had not been there? Through intensive training Seton has broken the cycle of abuse, neglect, and addiction to restore families and health.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Add more cottages so more girls in our community could benefit!

The Seton Home is wonderful asset to San Antonio and the South Texas community! It gives young mothers the chance to change their lives and that of their babies. Ms. Starkey has contributed significantly to San Antonio’s community via her leadership and growth of the Seton Home, a residential facility that provides housing and supportive services for pregnant and/or parenting teens and their children, which over the last 30 years has provided help and support to over 2,300 moms and their children.

After early retirement from Southwestern Bell in 2000, Ms. Starkey, being the caring and passionate person she is, decided to take on the role of Executive Director of the Seton Home. Since the opening of its doors in 1981, the Seton Home has nearly doubled from 24 to 40 beds. Furthermore, in 2006 a newly constructed 24-unit transitional living facility was opened and the on-campus day care moved to a new building on campus which accommodates 35 infants and toddlers. With regards to healthcare, Ms. Starkey has provided the moms and babies with medical and mental health services, including prenatal and postnatal care, dental and vision check-up, annual well-mom, well-baby check-ups, and emergency services. The agency provides support to residents as they battle addiction, emotional scars due to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and mental illness.

Over the last year alone, 176 moms and babies had a safe and secure place to live at the Seton Home. Almost 9000 meals and snacks were provided, nearly 1,400 therapy hours and 1,300 parenting session were provided to help young moms become loving and caring parents. This has lead to 9 moms earning their high school diploma or GED.

Most importantly, Ms. Starkey has dedicated her life to making a difference for these young people opening her heart and home to them. For example, in order for the babies and moms to experience the holidays, she would have them over to her house to trick or treat in a typical San Antonio neighborhood. She has implemented an award system for good behavior allowing moms to go to cultural events or local attractions, while volunteers take care of the babies thus allowing the teenage moms to get off campus to experience what the average teenager gets to do!

Ms. Starkey is the unsung hero that has been an incredible advocate for changing lives and I hope you will consider her for the Community Outreach Award. Ms. Starkey is helping put an end to the cycle of abuse and neglect teaching the moms how to live healthy and happy lives nurturing their children.

I am a volunteer/mentor at Seton Home. The service they provide to these young women is commendable. Each time I visit, I am reminded that these young women have not all had fair starts at life. At Seton Home, they are given life opportunies for improving their life and the life of their child/children. I'm honored to be a volunteer. making a difference. The experience has certainly made a difference in my life.

Seton Home provides a safe, caring, and educational environment for young teenage mothers and their children. It is a wonderful place for young mothers to learn to care for their babies, while surrounded by others their own age and in similar situations. I have been a mentor at Seton Home for a year and a half and have greatly enjoyed getting to know a young mom and her daughter. It is very rewarding experience watching my mentee thrive as a new mom and seeing her daughter grow. Seton Home is a very positive place that provides much needed services to young women and their children.

Seton Home is a wonderful home for young mothers who had made the brave decision to have their baby. It is a well ran organization whose goal is to provide a safe and nurturing environment. As soon as I toured Seton Home, I knew I wanted to be a part of what they are doing! Being a "teen mom" myself (years ago), I understood what these girls were going through to a certain extent. While I was never in a bad home situation or in trouble, I did know how hard it was for me to take care of a baby at a young age! These girls would have all odds stacked against them if it weren't for Seton Home!

I felt I had a lot to offer at Seton Home by being a metor. Seton Home was awesome in matching me up with a girl. Over the weeks I have spent with the girl I mentor, I have gotten to see how Seton Home operates and through conversations with my mente I have heard about all the great things Seton Home offers these young mothers. I love that Seton Home has manditory parenting and life skills classes. These classes will help break the cycle of abuse and poverty. They realize that the girls need fun activities as well. For example, the birthday parties, trips to the park, art classes, youth group, church on Sunday's (which I think is awesome!) and many other outings and activities throughout the year!

I also love that Seton Home teaches the girls responsiblity! The mothers are resposible for dressing their children correctly for the weather, packing enough bottles and diapers, taking their children to daycare, etc.

I think Seton Home is AWESOME! I feel so blessed to be a part of what Seton Home does for young mothers!

I honestly don't know. I might let the mentor access the mente's schedule online so that it's easier to plan around her classes and school stuff.

I first became aware of Seton home when I moved to San Antonio. Because of the work that they do I knew this was the place that I wanted to volunteer with. These young mothers need all the help they can get and Seton Home is there to provide it for them.

If it were not for Seton Home, these teenage mothers and their children will have no where to go. I am seeing two of these mothers and they have shared with me their sad experiences of being abuse by caregivers. At first they did not like being at Seton due to the rules and limited freedom but eventually they realized that Seton is a big help to them and it has allowed them to be in a safe and stable environment. They also like that Seton will help them even after they leave, through housing and day care assistance if they are going to college. I believe Seton is such a good agency that I would like to see more Seton Home branches throughout the city and the State. There is really a great need for more places like Seton Home. I'm glad I was able to be a part of it.

Build more buildings to allow more residents, provide more recreational time and activities to the residents, and have a cafeteria for the girls.
