We had a client who had served many years in the military and had fallen upon hard times which landed him in our shelter here at SERVE. A young man in his late 40's who had limited computer skills and spent most of his life working as a government contractor and later was forced to settle working in a warehouse because of a crime conviction. He lost his job and his government security clearance and because of his conviction, he had a difficult time gaining entry back into the work force. Our transitional housing office (after the screening and interview process) was able to have him placed on a waiting list for housing which was contingent upon him obtaining gainful employment. Doors were constantly closed as he struggled to find himself and all attempts to find work, with no transportation was all he experienced. "SERVE" prides itself in aiding people in need and once again we felt an obligation to help this man whose life appeared to come to a sudden halt because of a mistake he made in life which appeared to be an endless punishment, both emotionally and economically. Yet he pressed on, always sharing a word of encouragemnet to his peers in the shelter and a smile to everyone he encountered. With the help of a wonderful organization called OAR (Opportunities, Alternatives and Resources) in Fairfax, we partnered in introducing him to the BEACON program. After careful interview, screening and assessing his needs, BEACON was able to welcome him into their program which offered job training, a salary and housing along with other services in the community. Today, this gentleman has a new attitude about life... to never give up, have faith and everthing will work out for the very best. We trust that this message will be a lesson to many people who face this same struggle in life. Like our wish for him, we wish everyone the very best in life and wish to share this message and hope that someone else will benefit and not give up on life.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Emergency Assistance and providing temporary shelter for people in dire need.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

I can sometimes be a part of the solution.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Relentless and dedicated.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Provide additional housing; both long and short tern, provide transportation for homeless citizens residing in our temporary shelter, hire additional skilled staff and up-grade salaries in addition to providing medical assistance.

I believe SERVE is a good program. As with any non-profit organization there is a huge demand for funds and supplies. text

SERVE is an excellent program. SERVE also has outstanding staff. It is a very clean and safe environment. This is my second time here and it is still a very helpful program.

I am six months pregnant and came here with my husband and three children when we could not afford to pay our rent due to my husband losing his job. SERVE has provided us with a warm place to sleep, food, showers and an advocate that has helped us with many resources. There is also a great resource in the computer lab that has assisted us in finding employment and a place to live. My husband has already found another job. We have been very fortunate since when we came this time we had a car and my husband was able to find employment almost immediately. The staff has been very helpful and know their jobs very well. The staff treats everyone fairly and respectfully.

SERVE offers much needed services to the community, and include food distribution, a temporary shelter, transitional housing, workshops and support services, assistance in navigating social services. People sometimes get a bad hand dealt to them, and SERVE is a caring hand up to help people help themselves and get back on their feet.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the great respect that it has in the community, and the success stories of people who have used the services.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

find a way to get more people involved in helping and donating to the organization.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

everyone is treated with respect and dignity.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

caring and really were committed to making situation better for the clients.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

provide food and shelter for all those who needed it instead of having to make difficult decisions on who is eligible.

Ways to make it better...

I could meet more of the people who are part of the organization.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

the downward economic turn, which has created a greater need for services, and has also reduced the amount of donations being received.
