Issues: Job Training

Location: 818 18th Street, NW Suite 420 Washington DC 20006 USA

Mission: Our mission is to promote financial security for at-risk women and their dependents through comprehensive job training and employment placement services. The vast majority of the women we serve are victims of domestic violence, though we serve other at-risk women as well. Second Chance provides free professional human resource services to help our clients enter the workforce. We establish the communication pipeline between public and private organizations who offer employment and sponsorship opportunities, we guide clients through every aspect of their job search, and we follow up with our clients for at least two years after placement. (See www.scesnet.org) The goal is to actively assist at-risk women in achieving meaningful, long-term employment positions. We have seen from experience that when these women obtain such employment, they are empowered to become truly self sufficient, to rebuild self-worth, and to leave the cycle of violence permanently. Women from all walks of life have been placed in meaningful, long term employment positions with SCES' assistance. In fact, Second Chance has placed over 600 women in such positions since we opened our doors in 2002.
Results: Over 600 women placed in meaningful, long-term employment positions; Over 1,200 women served.
Geographic areas served: DC, MD, VA, NY, and more

It has been my privilege to serve as a volunteer with Second Chance Employment Services, and to provide offices in our corporate headquarters. The training and guidance the women receive is of the highest level, the follow-up work is done meticulously, the scheduling of appointments is handled professionally. Nothing is left to chance because there are human resources professionals guiding their every step. These women are sent into the workforce career- ready, and there is a job waiting for them. When they first come to SCES, they truly don't know how they will survive, they have a feeling of worthlessness. All of this has been beaten into them. Here, we see them bloom, we see them believe in themselves, we see them come to the realization that they have value, that they can pull themselves up, pull their families and extended families up. It is an amazing metamorphosis, and I am proud to be a part of it.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

I've worked with Ludy Green and Second Chance Employment Services for several years supporting their efforts to empower their clients with financial independence. We have helped with resumes, interviewing skills and ultimately securing employment. This organization treats each client as an individual and knows no bounds in terms of seeking the necessary resources that will prepare them for future success. The respect that this organization demands for the clients ensures they will see themselves differently - as valued, worthy and competent to move out of their current situation to a life where they are safe, productive and able to support themselves and their families.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Amazing, diverse, committed and empathetic. They treated the clients with tremendous respect and insist on the best for them. Ludy maintains a very high bar for the services for her clients. She ensures they feel they are worthy of the best

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Expand services to a larger number of clients across a greater geography

My experience has been participating in the committee that organizes its annual fundraising gala that raises funds to help meet its annual operating costs. This non-profit has an extremely dedicated and experienced group of supporters who help organize this annual event.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

seeing the dedicated support of its volunteers who are truly committed to the mission and accomplishments of Second Chance Employment Services.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

not what I can do to support it, but what it gives back to me by knowing its abundant work and accomplishments.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

generous, compassionate and professional.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

transform the world by helping survivors of domestic abuse and violence find financial security and a second-chance.

I have known and observed the work that Second Chance Employment Service has done since its inception in 2001. SCES has grown considerably but it has remained steadfast on the most important contribution. SCES provides "real" help for the those in need with the most difficult aspect of the process "the initial break" from the abuser. SCES provides real logistical assistance in helping women make the transition from the abusive environment by bringing them to a place where they can begin the process of healing and building independance. Without the hands on assistance with "breaking free" victims would never be able to start anew.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

seeing that 100% of donations goes right to the victims. When you make a contribution you really feel it is helping someone "today"

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Angels. Truely warm, wonderful and generous people.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Save 100's of 1,000' of lives and reeducate America on the realities and the epidemic of Domestic Violence.

Second Chance does amazing work, helping women who have been abused becomefinancially independent. I had the privilege of being a job partner with Second Chance to help place some if their clients in positions. The candidates were excellent and well prepared and there was no fee! This is a win win situation for employers. I urge potential employers to partner with Second Chance and be part of this wonderful organization. You will get a great candidate pool and be giving back. I also urge those of you who feel in the Holiday Spirit to send donations. In preparing these women for the positions second chance needs resources.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

being able to place excellent candidates in vacant positions and helping these women to become financially independent.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

getting to know and owrk with it's founder Ludy Green.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Professional and devoted.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Help chance the world and be one step closer to stopping domestic abuse.
