Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Environment, Land Resources Conservation, Natural Resources Conservation & Protection

Mission: Save Mount Diablo's mission is to preserve Mount Diablo's peaks, surrounding foothills and watersheds through land acquisition and preservation strategies designed to protect the mountain's natural beauty, biological diversity and historic and agricultural heritage; enhance our area's quality of life; and provide recreational opportunities consistent with protection of natural resources.

Results: Save Mount Diablo has helped to preserve over 90,000 acres since 1971. We save more land through advocacy than acquisition, and we have won 11 out of 11 ballot measures since 2005. Just since 2013: we made our largest acquisition and preserved 1,080-acre Curry Canyon Ranch; achieved national accreditation from the Land Trust Accreditation Commission; announced our first Conservation Easement; and began entering classrooms as part of our new Conservation Collaboration Agreement program to educate and engage young people in the importance of protecting our remaining natural lands.

Geographic areas served: Northern California

Programs: Discover Diablo: Free Guided Public Hikes 5k-50k Trail Races Artist Collaboration 4-day Guided Camping Trip "Moonlight on the Mountain" Fundraising Gala

My husband and I had the chance to join SMD on its 4-Day Diablo spring trek last year. It was among the most enjoyable 4 days of our lives--seeing so many corners of the diverse and beautiful land they have worked so hard to preserve. Staffmembers, volunteers and Board Members are hard working and knowledgeable. Their tremendous sense of mission and fun is truly inspiring; they have an espirit de corp that has to be experienced to be believed. I don't know when I have seen so much talent woven together into a cohesive whole. Count us in as life-long members! Nancy Dakin Woltering
