I have been volunteering at safe since September of 2011. I will say that SAFE is an exceptional place for horses in need. Having been there for a few months, I have seen and assisted the process and progress of new horses that come in. Most come in hungry, scared, hurt, or not sure of human interaction. SAFE gives these horses a chance to change all of that. Horses that don't want anything to do with people soon become excited to see us and gladly allow a halter over their head and ears. It really proves that everyone deserves a second chance at trust and love.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Seeing horses lives changed for the better. They are given a second chance to be happy and healthy.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Make the property and barn bigger to help more horses.

It is an honor to be associated with an organization full of such knowledgeable, compassionate and professional people. Always with a priority on what is best for the horses and with an understanding of the importance of integrity and transparency. SAFE is rescue done right.

I spend most of my free Saturdays volunteering at S.A.F.E., doing general barn chores, cleaning, and helping feed the horses. Everyone I've met within this organization is truly and wholly dedicated to helping the helpless - taking in these animals that are sometimes nearly at the end of their line, caring for them, and rehabilitating them into the magnificent, amazing beings that they all have the potential to be. The horses receive full care and training - they are healthy, well maintained, and mentally sound. Every time I am there, everyone works hard, and we don't cut any corners. On January 21st with a snow storm rolling in and thick hail starting to come down, no one left the site until all the chores were finished. I feel proud to be involved with such a top-notch organization.

What one change could this group make that would improve your volunteer experience?

I believe they already have made this change, but at the time when I started, I don't feel that training for brand new volunteers was thorough enough. I know that they have made changes to the volunteer orientation and training and I'm sure it is better now.

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

The skills and experience I am gaining at SAFE will prove to be very valuable when it comes time for me to adopt my own horse(s).

This was the best experience for me,looking for a horse to adopt,I saw Whiskey on their web site, contacted Jaime Taff from SAFE,they did give me the opportunity to go and try the horse, one of they volunteer did bring the mare to a riding area trails, rode with her for few hours, and i wanted that horse,SAFE,made sure that i will be able to care for the mare, with visit to my home, and my background, after all that was done, they did think i would be a good owner for that mare,we did seal the contract and i did adopted Whiskey in May 2009,2 years later they did come over to check on the horse,as far i am concerned they are the best rescue place in Washington,i love my mare,we do trail riding, and also go to the high country that horse is awesome,we make a good pair and have a great time.Thank you SAFE.

I adopted my horse Leo through SAFE in November 2011. I first met him at a fundraiser for another horse. Leo was getting care at the same facility after being gelded and for some other illnesses. My whole family fell in love with Leo at first sight. After we left that evening, we decided to pursue getting to know and adopt Leo. What we didn't know was the extent of his illnesses. All the people at SAFE were so generous and forthcoming about everything going on with him even though he was not available for adoption at that point because of his health. There were a lot of unknowns with Leo and I feel like SAFE did an excellent job working with us and the various vets to make sure we were able and willing to take on Leo. The processes that you go through to adopt a horse through them was throughly explained on their website and they went just as explained. They have been a fabulous non profit to work with and I would recommend them to anyone wanting to adopt, volunteer or support. Leo is doing fabulously now with us and we will forever be grateful to SAFE for rescueing and rehabilitating him!!!

They went to great lengths financially to find out what was wrong with Leo. The diagonistic tests he required were very expensive. I appreciate that they saw a future for him despite his illnesses. Having him as part of our family has been fantastic and we will never be the same!!!

I had the pleasure of adopting a horse from SAFE a couple years ago. I was very impressed with the care given to their horses, their honesty, and their financial transparency. My little Arab filly was born at SAFE (out of a mare that had been seized by animal control) and was a pocket pony from the moment she came home as a yearling. It was obvious that she was well loved during her time at SAFE.

I had the opportunity to adopt a horse from SAFE in 2010. The amount of love and care that they put into this mare in her rehabilitation process was truly amazing. This is true of every horse that comes through SAFE. SAFE is dedicated to responsible horse ownership and is thorough in their adoption process, making sure each horse is placed well in their "forever home." My experience in adopting a horse through SAFE was excellent. I felt that SAFE was in every way honest and transparent about every aspect of the horse I adopted and the adoption process. I am also impressed with how SAFE takes the time to follow up on the progress of each horse once adopted. I hope to adopt more rescue horses in the future, and my first choice would be to adopt through SAFE!

I discovered this rescue in 2008 after spending time with other equine related organizations. The huge difference for me was the honesty and professionalism among the group and it's supporters. I never expected to find quantifiable results but have now grown to expect it. It's level of care and follow through sold me early on and is the reason I chose to become part of the team.

I've learned so much about rescue, rehabilitation & general horse care since I met this group. I'm absolutely a better equestrian because of them.

Give them a bigger public presence. People need to see what this group does!

I came to them while they were working with horses from the herd my personal rescued horse came from and I just wanted to help. I have now worked with S.A.F.E. for 3 years and they've impressed me from the start with their commitment to the horses in their care by rescuing, rehabilitating, training (where age appropriate) and responsible rehoming. Although the connections began online, the organization is very "hands on" through every step of the process, including site checks and well checks on their alumni. The fact that they post their financial reports online and work hard to create a sense of community in their outreach programs makes this an amazing organization!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I feel that I've become a better equestrian in terms of my knowledge and experience though my interaction with the vast network of like minded people. I also am deeply moved by the stories of strength the horses show to survive and by the amazing dedication of the volunteers.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Give SAFE a louder voice. Their message needs to be heard.

I love the work SAFE does to help horses in need. I follow SAFE horses - both current horses and horses that have found new lives through SAFE. I love hearing the stories of how they reach out to horses in need. Also, I have attended their fun show (entry fees used to help horses). Someday when I'm able to adopt a horse in need (currently have 2 horses) I will go to SAFE.

Review from Guidestar

I had been looking to adopt a horse for quite sometime, and was very happy when I was able to adopt "Chance" through the safe.org. This NP was so thorough in the process of checking out the potential homes for their animals, I was amazed. They had only the best interest of that animal in mind. The horse community that this NP sprang from is so devoted to their cause, I have nothing but the utmost respect for these caregivers. I have recommended this NP to several of my Nursing friends, and have continued to boast about my horse "Chance". It has been just over a year now that i have had him, and am still continually amazed by the amount of support ( advice, friendships, knowledge) that i still receive.

The Great!

no changes that i can think of at this time.
