Working with the people in this organization has been terrific. They are all so dedicated. We are expanding the program so that we can make additional distributions of clothing, toys and books at other times during the year -- not just before Christmas. We are reviewing our process so that we get to the people that need help the most and are trying to help themselves. The recipients are always treated with dignity and respect -- we don't want them to feel then are not worthy just because they have found themselves in unfortunate sets of circumstances. They always express their gratitude for the gifts and the way they were treated. One great organization!!!

This is the finest organization I have ever been a part of. The long-term dedication of hundreds of volunteers is amazing. The quality and quanitity of donations to needy children is greater than any other agency of its kind in the area. More than 18,000 children are served each year. The agency strives to put Christmas back in the home - so that parents can provide a happy holiday for their children. We have begun to reach out to the same population throughout the year. Working for this agency is an honor and a thrill.

I have volunteered with this organization for over 8 years and it is a wonderful place. This year - 2011 - we gave new clothes, new toys, and new books to about 11,000 children. In addition we served another 5,000 children through our Outreach Program where we assist other charities in our area. We give out our gifts the first week in December because surveys have shown that there is less violence in the homes if the parents know that they have at least something to give their children for Christmas (or whatever their current beliefs dictate). One parent is invited - by invitation with an appointment date and time -- to come to our warehouse and then they are escorted by a volunteer on a "shopping" trip to select the clothes, toys and book they would like to have for their children. In the surveys completed by the recipients they have indicated that they have been treated with dignity and respect and enjoyed the shopping. Because San Bernardino has just been listed as the second poorest large city in the United States (behind only Detroit) there is a great need for our services. We are limited only by the space we have and the money we receive in donations. We are working on programs to get more grants from larger corporations and hopefully we can maintain at least the same level of giving to the needy children as we have in the past. We have many ladies that make dresses, pajamas, and nighgowns for us and other ladies that knit slippers to go with the pajamas or knit or crochet sweaters or ponchos to either go with the dresses or be matched with a pair of pants. Ladies also make baby blankets for us or larger blankets that are used in a gift for older children in the form of a "sleepover kit" which will include other items such as a stuffed animal or a game, etc. Any help is always appreciated -- whether it be in the form of money or in the form of work done either at home or at the warehouse. We will be happy to give anyone a tour. Check out our website and give us a call or e-mail us.

This is a great organization and is run by all volunteers--not one person there gets any money. They only give out new clothing, toys and books and the parents come through the warehouse at their appointment time to select the items they would like to give to their children in whatever tradition their family normally observes. They also have some bonus items that have been donated from which the parents can select something like a household item or a book or magazine. It is one of the greatest charities I have ever been involved with.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

how absolutely thrilled the parents are when they know early in December that they have at least clothes, a toy & book for each of their children 12 or under. The layettes for children 0-18 months include a hand crocheted or quilted blanket plus outfit.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

not change a thing -- it is so great just the way it is.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

that we are all volunteers. We meet every Wednesday starting the 2d week in January until our distribution in early Dec. We accomplish a lot as we package the clothes and toys but we have all become close friends.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

absolutely wonderful and very giving of their time and efforts.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

update the warehouse--add another bathroom and repave the parking lot. We could invest some of the money to insure the organization will continue for many years.

Ways to make it better...

it would have been possible to serve even more children. We are limited by the amount of donations that we receive and the size of our warehouse. Donations of clothing, blankets, toys and books would help us stretch our dollars.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

making sure that we get enough donations to serve the 14,000 children that we serve each year.

One thing I'd also say is that...

we can always use blankets (baby or larger ones for sleepover kits)--either quilted, crocheted or knitted. Also, children's clothing--knitted sweaters, sewn dresses, PJs, gowns, slippers (which we put with the PJs/gowns), hats, scarves, pants, or shirts
