I started volunteering for the sanctuary when i was about eight years old. I am now eighteen years old and even thought ten years have passed, I still can not find a better group of people. They truly care about the dogs. They saw a cause that needed fighting for and they stuck to it even when it was hard to do. Even though they are a relatively small organization, i honestly believe they are the best one out there.

The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs is a wonderful organization that has helped so many! Senior dogs are often overlooked in shelters and pounds. The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs recognizes them for the treasures they really are! They rescue senior dogs from the shelters and pounds where chances of adoption are extremely low. They provide the best vet care, no matter what! I have witnessed volunteers going above and beyond for the dogs, the dedication is outstanding. This organization is led by an amazing director and board who never sway away from the mission of helping old dogs in need. I am proud to say I have been volunteering for The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs for about 8 years now. I have fostered for them as well and I must say there truly is no greater joy! I am grateful to The Sanctuary for allowing me to be part of this "family" of volunteers! Giving a senior dog a second chance at life, what a wonderful thing!

I have been a volunteer with this organization for 8 years. I have served as a foster home for numerous dogs during that time. Some of my foster dogs were adopted after being with me only a few weeks, while others were with me several months. And during that time I have had a few that stayed with me until it was their time to cross to the Rainbow Bridge. When a dog enters The Sanctuary For Senior Dogs rescue, it is guaranteed a loving home for the rest of its life. The goal is to find it a loving forever home, but sometimes a dog comes to us with emotional or medical issues that prevent it from being a good candidate for placement, so it will stay safe and loved with its foster caregiver. Ever dog I was lucky enough to foster, touched my life in a very special personal way.

I have been blessed to be a part of this organization for about 10 years. The S,anctuary for Senior Dogs is exactly what the name indicates ,a true sanctuary for old dogs who have found themselves homeless and frightened. Thanks to this wonderful group of caring people these amazing dogs are able to live out their senior years in loving, caring FOREVER homes. I have seen many a dog come to the Sanctuary freightened and alone and in a very short they are happy, heathy and loved. The most beautiful experience I have had with the organization is taking a dog to his or her new home and seeing the happiness they give and get. The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs and the loving people that are a part of it, big or small, is truly a life saving organization.I am now on the board and very honored to be!

The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs is just that. It is a place where abandon senior dogs get a second chance to find a loving home and people to care for them, love them, and cherish them. The volunteers, staff and board have undying devotion to seeing that each dogs needs are met be it medical, emotional, or training needs. The adoption process structured to ensure appropriate placement in loving homes. The foster families provide temporary or long term / permanent care to seniors while they wait for the right home or grow old and reach the end of their lives. The Sanctuary is a wonderful organization, filled with wonderful people and wonderful senior dogs who have so much to offer. Those resiliant seniors are the heart of this organization and the best friends anyone can ever hope for. My last four dogs have been from the Sanctuary and two of them are going strong. Hopefully I have brought them the joy they have brought me.

I started as a volunteer with the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs about 6 years ago, becoming a board member a few years after that. I am so honored to be a small part of an organization that does such wonderful work. Senior dogs are so amazingly special and it is truly heartbreaking how many of them end up in dire circumstances through no fault of their own. Other reviewers have talked about all of the things that the Sanctuary does to meet the needs of these wonderful creatures, but one of the things that also impressed me was their mission to show what these dogs can still contribute to society. Almost since their beginning, the Sanctuary has had one or more senior therpay dogs actively giving back to the community by visiting nursing homes, developmental centers, library reading programs, etc. I could go on for some time about the difference the Sanctuary makes in the lives of so many deserving dogs, but right now my own 13 year old has brought me a toy and is asking to go outside.

I have worked with and have known a huge number of animal rescue organizations in the past 30 years, and the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs ranks among the very top of all of them. They are unique in the fact that they focus more on the individual dog rather than the number of dogs (although the number of dogs they are able to rescue and care for is very impressive, too). Every senior dog is given 100% of whatever they need in terms of vet care, emotional care, love and compassion, training, patience, and time. If they cannot be adopted for any reason, the Sanctuary will give them all the love and care they want in a foster home for the remainder of their lives. They are never euthanized to make room for more. The ones that can be adopted are adopted only to the best of homes to ensure that they are never abandoned or lost or dumped again, and that they live out their lives with safety, health, and love. Each dog that enters the Sanctuary is given the love and dignity he/she so very much deserves, and is given a lifetime commitment by the Sanctuary. The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs is also unique in that it focuses only on senior dogs, which are the ones that, sadly, society tends to throw away in favor of the younger puppies. The Sanctuary sees the immense value and worthiness of these seniors and what they have to offer us, and makes sure that they are given the love and respect that they so richly deserve in return.

Two years ago there was a tiny, very old, very fragile chihuahua at the rural high-kill shelter where I volunteered to arrange rescue for their dogs. She was very sweet but in terrible shape, missing teeth, loaded with fleas, hair loss and it was clear she had other health problems as well. I was familiar with their work and so I contacted the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs. They had a foster available and agreed to take her. She was taken to a vet immediately, received the very best care possible, and then went to a loving "forever" foster home because she was too fragile to spay. Her last days could have been spent laying on a cold concrete floor in a dog pound without their help. I rescued hundreds of dogs during my years of going to this pound and some of them will stay in my heart forever. Evie was one of those dogs. I had followed their work before and continue to do so and have seen many beautiful loving dogs get second chances because of the work they do. Seniors are so deserving and generally very hard to find a rescue for, especially those who are very old or have serious health problems. Every dog that joins the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs has a safe, kind, loving place to live out however much time they have. Their contribution to the rescue community is immeasurable.

The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs (SSD) is not “only” a rescue organization for senior dogs, but this grass roots group illustrates how all living beings have worth through compassion and caring. I have had the privilege of volunteering with the SSD as well as having been a foster and adoptive parent. Priceless. May more organizations stay as true to their mission as the SSD.

The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs provides hope for the most desperate animals in a shelter. It's rare for a senior to get adopted from a shelter, however, it is almost impossible for a senior with health or behavior issues to make it out alive. I have been fostering a 10 year old mixed breed dog with a treatable thyroid condition for months. I have trouble imagining she would have made it out of a shelter without the help of the Sanctuary for Senior Dogs. When she was found as a stray, she had tumors and other health issues. She can be terribly shy with people and is not one of those dogs that would stand out in a shelter. However, in a foster home she thrives. She gets to play with other dogs (which she enjoys), lay in a comfy bed, eat good food, go on walks, have her medical needs attended to and most importantly, learn that she can trust people and be part of a family again. The Sanctuary for Senior dogs gave her hope and treated her life with the respect and dignity she deserves.
