My daughters attended numerous classes and camps at Junior Theatre (JT). They were also members of the cast or crew for many JT shows/performances. It was wonderful to watch my daughters' self-confidence and abilities grow as they learned acting skills and took on more and more challenging roles. It is great to see how the multi-age groups work together; with older students helping younger students. And the staff and teachers are always very supportive of the students. My family has also subscribed to the JT season for many years. Performances provide a great opportunity for students to use their skills in front of an audience.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my daughters' increased self-confidence and in the performances that I have enjoyed.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the sense of caring that I observe in the staff, teachers, students, and parents. It is a great community!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

bring the joy of theatre to more kids; especially less privileged kids.

San Diego Junior Theatre has done more for my son's personal development than any other other program he has been a part of. I am not sure where he would be today if not for SDJT. And he is not alone. After 10 years of involvement with SDJT, I can honestly say that it does more to prepare kids for life as an adult, regardless of whether or not they pursue a career in theater, than any sports or other extracurricular program available in San Diego. Thank you JT for helping my son become a man.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

add a more developed Conservatory component to meet the needs of thoseolder kids looking to pursue a career in theater.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

how it touches so many kids from all walks of life.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

conscientious and committed.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

expand its program to reach even more kids in need.

Ways to make it better...

funding hadn't always been an issue.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

funding.

One thing I'd also say is that...

any kid with an interest in the theater living in San Diego needs to find his/her way to SDJT - it will change their lives in a very positive way.

All three of my children have taken classes at San Diego Junior Theatre. They love the classes and learned so much. They have all participated as both cast and crew members on the main stage and have grown and learned. Performing has given them a chance to gain confidence, stretch beyond their comfort zone and work as part of a team. I have volunteered backstage, with fundraising events and as a member of the board and auxiliary. I volunteer because I think it is important for all children to experience the arts and SDJT makes that possible.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Watching the productions. Seeing my children grow in their arts experience. I love seeing children in the audience light up when the story on stage comes alive.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Watching children grow as they become actors, singers or crew members. I have also made my own friendships through volunteering at JT. Working on projects to raise funds or improve the theatre has been a fulfilling and rewarding experience for me.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Educated, passionate and friendly. I have enjoyed volunteering and working with the other volunteers and staff.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Expand its outreach program and give the gift of theatre to all children. Expand its education program and add to its inclusion program. With more financing JT could explore different kinds of theatre and bring it to more communiites.

I am born and raised in San Diego and one of my fondest memories was participating in Junior Theatre. Whether it was in a class, on stage, or behind the scenes the experience was invaluable. I remember it felt like I was always surrounded by the best talent and the best teachers and the organization really focused on letting the kids run all aspects of a production. They gave us the tools and we were given free rein to use them. It has been 15 years since I last participated at JT but the experience will last a life time. I know that because of the opportunities given to me at JT I will be a life-long patron of the arts and will always believe strongly in the fact that the arts are priceless in a child’s total development.

San Diego Junior Theatre has been such a valuable experience for both my girls - they are part of a community of kids their age, they are learning skills that will help them throughout their lives, and they are having a great time! I love it, and would recommend that any parent try out SDJT for their kids!

I've taken nieces and nephews to many of this organization's productions and we have been WOWed by each and every one. Don't let the name "San Diego JUNIOR Theatre" fool you -- the shows they present aren't what you see at high schools or from neighborhood theater groups. San Diego Junior Theatre professionally produces shows that feature children and teens who are specially trained for being on stage AND behind the scenes. Pros guide them through all aspects of each production. Additionally, many shows feature live music accompaniment performed by experienced musicians. I don't even know the kids who put on the productions, but at the end of each show, I get choked up thinking about how proud their families must be of them for being part of such quality work. Catch just one of their shows, and I have no doubt that you'll go back for more.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

seeing how focused young people can be when they're encouraged and adequately guided.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

spirited and dedicated.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

begin moving toward becoming an umbrella org. w/chapters all over the country, increasing appreciation & understanding of the arts among youths. This could also contribute to more youths building self-confidence, & in turn, boost levels of education.

Ways to make it better...

the organization had actual offices for its staff.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

a lack of patrons who are willing and able to cultivate major donors.

My daughter has been involved in Junior Theatre for more than four years. She has taken classes, attended camps, been in the cast and crew of shows, and has even trained to work at future camps. She has made great friends and has grown tremendously at JT. The staff is professional and organized. It's the right balance of fun, learning, and structure.

A great place for the whole family... my three children have "grown up" there, and JT has become our community. Staff and teachers are wonderful mentors for artistic kids. Productions are professional and often quite moving. The JT Journey is a terrific experience for kids ages 4-18 who might step to their own drummers. I am going to miss the camaraderie when my youngest child graduates this summer.

If I could give this organization 6 stars I would. It's been around for 60+ years -- I'm an alumna and my two children are the next generation lucky enough to have SDJT in their lives. The well organized classes and productions teach kids teamwork, self discipline, determination, public speaking skills, creative and critical thinking, how to follow instruction, and most importantly how to use their imaginations while having fun learning! The staff and teaching artists are top-notch, many holding graduate degrees in their fields. I love the location because while they're in class I can either get some exercise in beautiful Balboa Park, tap into the Park's WiFi and get some work done, or have a glass of wine at the Prado Restaurant. I highly recommend San Diego Junior Theatre.

The Great!
