San Diego Dance Theatre

Rating: 4.89 stars   143 reviews

Issues: Arts & Culture

Location: 2650 Truxtun Road Suite 108 San Diego CA 92106 USA

Mission:

To create and perform intelligent dances that inspire the people of our region and beyond and to provide access to the viewing, training in and dancing of these dances by diverse audiences and dancers.

Programs:

San Diego Dance Theater has truly carved a creative niche in the San Diego arts scene. Trolley Dances was created in 1999 as a collaboration between SDDT and the Metropolitan Transit System. Each year, Artistic Director Isaacs invites choreographers with diverse aesthetics and styles from around the U.S. and Mexico to create six site-specific works for different venues along an established San Diego trolley route.  Past performance spaces have included the escalator of a shopping center, the banks of the San Diego River, the inside of a hotel room, a library, a sports bar and a fountain.  The distinctiveness of these different venues creates creative challenges for the 50 dancers who bring each piece to life.  In 2008, we inaugurated our Kids on Board program that enabled students from underserved neighborhoods the opportunity to watch a special performance of Trolley Dances and to participate in workshops teaching public art/dance.

Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater has a long term track record of student scholarship, emerging choreographer mentorship, and community accessible dance theater. I first became involved with the SDDT in 1999 as a student and volunteer. Jean Isaacs displayed a generosity to all San Diego artists and groups that I found unmatched within the community. An immensely talented teacher and choreographer, Jean also found time to support the arts community as a whole without proprietorship or inclusiveness; her commitment and generosity inspired me as well as her strong work ethic. For this reason, with a full schedule, I made time to donate my skills in any way I could over the years. The company follows her lead, giving back in multiple ways as teachers and performers. I have volunteered my time with various youth groups as a videographer and saw her SDDT company members in action working with the kids at King Chavez and High Tech High. The positive relationship between these SDDT teachers and the youth will resonate for years to come, benefiting San Diego in priceless ways for the family and community good.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

SDDT school programs, over a decade access to the theater for young and senior audience members through Trolley Dances and through artist mentorship and scholarship.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

wish for them to have a greater financial base to become even more visible within San Diego County. SDDT offers such accomplished and unique programs that i wish everyone could experience such art, which we need to balance our lives mentally, emotionally and physically. I also wish we had the means to grow even more within the inner city.

I have personally seen San Diego Dance Theater touch many lives, including my own. From fostering and encouraging different ideas in movement to providing a wonderful space for people of all ages and levels, San Diego Dance Theater is truly one of a kind. The amazing, challenging and thoughtful movement offered in classes brings a sense of accomplishment to dancers once it is mastered. Not only does San Diego Dance Theater offer the community wonderful insights into the world of modern dance through performances, this organization is aiming to continue outreach efforts by engaging youth in after school programs as well as providing classes for older adults giving them the opportunity to express themselves creatively. This organization is at the forefront of creativity, outreach, and adventure in this world we call modern dance.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

By creating a wonderful environment, before, during, and after class, when I am at the studio I feel that I am at my second home. After taking a hiatus from dance for a few years I always feel welcomed and encouraged by all who are around. This wonderful feeling encourages me to give back as much as possible so that others can experience all that San Diego Dance Theater has to offer.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Additional touring of the company to locations beyond San Diego.

Jean Isaacs' SDDT hits the artistic gold standard for modern dance. It's smart yet accessible, and gorgeous to watch in the theater. SDDT prides itself on opening art into public spaces and developing diverse audiences, artists, and venues. In short, it's a gem. I've been following the company for over 20 years and still am delighted and amazed with the work and the beauty of the dancers.

SDDT provided summer dance programs in rural Ramona which were attended by my children. It was a priceless experience for them to perform in a professional show, and for the entire community to have this quality artists.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Make it last forever!! THE PROGRAM IS REJECTING MY FIVE STAR RATING

I enjoyed Jean Isaacs amazing choreography for many years before being honored with an invitation to the board. Jean and her dancers continue to perform at the highest levels from Trolley Dances to Cabaret Dances. With Cabaret Dance performances this season at the The David & Dorothea Garfield Theatre at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in La Jolla, we reached many new audience members. Dance is the most challenging art to perform and to garner support. I invite everyone out there to come see dance, come see the Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater and be inspired.

The dance company not only holds performances, but provides dance instruction to members of the community and students, including San Diego high school students who create their own choreography and put on their own performances.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Find finding to take the pressure off of the choreographer and the dancers so they can concentrate on doing what they do best.

SD Dance Theater provides immeasurable opportunities for individuals of all ages and abilities to participate in the wonderful art form of dance. The spectrum runs the gamut - from 1) volunteering (fundraisers, event planning, set up, ticket sales, tour guides) to 2) personal growth opportunities with exploring delicious and creative movement vocabulary in dance class, master classes, studio showings, Trolley Dances, and other unique performance opportunities to 3) taking in the beautiful artistry of the SDDT dancers. Jean Isaacs is an amazing and inspiring dance educator, the best in San Diego.

I've been fortunate to be a volunteer, a performer, and a spectator. I'm inspired to be a part of this organization because of my own personal growth experience through dance with SDDT and through the many enriched relationships cultivated in this setting. Dance (class) helps balance me and gives meaning to my life. Recently, I've witnessed the SD dance community come together to support each other and the future of dance at the 1st Young Choreographer's Prize, a project conceived/produced by SDDT.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would like to find additional resources to fund administrative/executive support, as well as additional resources to support a larger dance studio space.
