Saint James Food Pantry

Although I only went to St. James Food Pantry twice as a volunteer, I decided to go there every Saturday, since saw there's such a great need for many elderly. St. James have a very systematic working process, that food can be given to clients efficiently and without wasting food. Great place to serve that you'll feel love all around you!

My wife and I are co-chairs for the Jazzin to Feed event on May 8th, 2011. We are so honored to work with the staff at St. James Food Pantry, they are the kindest people that work with everyone, no matter religion, race or background. They help people, plain and simple.

As a volunteer at St. James Food Pantry I see first hand the good that is done here. Many people come in, some in tears because a family member has been laid off and had too move back in with parents, and there just isn't enough money to go around to buy food. They are so grateful for whatever we can do to help them. Many senior citizens, on fixed income, come in receiving a monthly sustenance to carry them from month to month. This is done by a small Catholic Church on Chicago's south side who are very committed to the social justice call of the Gospel

The passionate and organized staff make St. James Food Pantry a great place to volunteer. As a volunteer, I felt they made everyone feel very welcome. You can definitely see that their efforts are really making a difference in their community.

create greater awareness in surrounding communities of what they are doing to help. They're are many people passionate about fighting hunger, but may not know where or who St. James Food Pantry is.
I volunteered at Saint James Food Pantry during the summer when I was in grammar school. I was a part of a group of teens who delivered food to seniors. I enjoyed knowing I was helping people. That is what Saint James is all about ....helping people.

I volunteer at Saint James Food Pantry every chance I get - the number of people that they help with the speed and the efficiency that we do makes me feel like less of a bystander and more of a participant in helping out as much as I can. There are so many older immigrants who come who are willing to stand up to 3 hours out in the cold and rain for $25 of groceries that it really makes me grateful for what I do have.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
Chicago, down in Bronzeville. In the way that they selfless give of themselves, expecting nothing thereof. On the second Saturday of every month.

Expand their operations so that they can serve more people with greater speed so they don't have to wait outside. As it stands now, the space is so small that we can only serve so many people so quickly while the rest wait outside.
I worked at St. James Catholic Church for a while and the church offices are next to the pantry. I saw the amazing network of volunteers, professionals and guests in the pantry each day as I came in to work. It is amazing how efficiently it runs, how there are always many volunteers working to make the guests' visits timely and satisfying, and the coordinator of it all, Cathy Moore, always has a smile on her face and a pleasant word for everyone who enters the door. St. James Food Pantry doesn't just feed bodies, it feeds souls!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
invite more people to share funding? This organization is doing AMAZING work with minimal resources. The hearts are there. The organization is there. More is always needed, but I know the director, Peter Wawire, is working it every way he can. It's just a great place doing great work.
I volunteered for the pantry last year on Thanksgiving. It was such a touching and beautiful experience. The "Homey" feel that St. James gives to all thier guests no matter the color of their skin, nor the cleanliness of thier clothes, gave me a sense of pride to be a part of such a wonderful opportunity. The volunteers provide a great experience for the guests as if they were having thanksgiving dinner with family. St James were so grateful for thier volunteers, however they do not realize they give us so much more. I am definitely volunteering again for the holidays to be apart of a beautiful thing again because no other experience made me so grateful for the things i had taken for granted that are so precious to me.

I love volunteering at St. James Food Pantry because of the great staff and volunteers there! They make every single person that walks through the food pantry feel at home. This organization helps serve the low-income families and elderly of the local communities. St. James is definitely one of the most dedicated and welcoming organization that I've volunteered for!
