I continue to be amazed by the depth of on-the-ground, heart-to-heart practical help that Run Your Race (RYR) provides in its community. For people who are out of work due to layoffs, lack of skills, language barriers and other factors, Barbara Miller and her small staff provide customized assistance for each client. Maybe the client needs help writing an effective resume, maybe they need to learn how to budget their funds, or they need proper clothes to wear or transportation for an interview. RYR also provides basic computer training, practice sessions for job interviews, language training, emergency food and housing assistance, large doses of encouragement and other types of help. Being a locally-run program/ministry, RYR is personally connected with their clients who area also their neighbors in their shared community. Run Your Race is not a large-budget program, but they would love to have added resources to help even more people learn to provide support for themselves and their families. It's a great blessing to everyone involved to see people move from hopeless, confused and insecure to become hopeful, trained and confident---productive and proud members of society. While RYR is excited to work with people from all walks of life and faiths, the principles employed to assist each person are based solidly on the love God demonstrates for all people. We need more of these types of local help programs.

When people in a community need help, I believe the help should come from as local a source as possible. Who better can understand the needs and provide specific help than a person's neighbors in a community. Run Your Race Ministries is a great local resource for the people of their community. There are personal relationships built and customized care given. The clients are not merely numbers in a computer waiting in a line and filling out forms, but they are treated with love and respect as unique individuals. The help is given from the heart, not to fulfill a job duty. Run Your Race is a great local example of how support and benevolence should be handled in communities all across this nation.

Run Your Race Ministries is a grass-roots-level, locally-based service agency that helps the unemployed receive education and training regarding finding (and keeping) a job. Freely provided to participants is interview training, resume writing, work clothing, transportation to job fairs and interviews, hands-on computer training and other benefits. The ministry contacts local employers to seek openings for participants. Run Your Race partners with other local ministries and agencies to combine resources---to prevent wasteful overlap and inefficiencies of "reinventing the wheel." I believe the best solution to most problems can be found at the community level--not via some centralized program run from some far-away place. Therefore, the main benefit I like about Run Your Race is that it deals with real people with real needs on a very local level.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I am located several states away, so I don't get to see the people first-hand. But I keep in close touch by hearing the stories of real people who are encouraged in their desire to find a job and support their families.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Run Your Race Ministries has only been in operation for a few years, and a lot has been accomplished so far. I hope that changes for the future will include landing some financial grants from supportive organizations, being more and more connected to the local job providers, and spreading the word farther about the mission, successes and opportunities for participation with this organization.

I lost my job in June of this year and met with Mrs. Miller and she has help me with not only jobs leads but many have lead to interviews. This organization has also help the town of Bladensburg get jobs for many like myself to find work. Mrs. Miller also help with resume writing and other skills that one would need to gain elopment. She help with our childen in both of our centers and work with the town on other projects. These are just an fews of the things I've personally experience with this organization.

To me, Run Your Race Ministries is better than the state programs that only help you with employment. At Run Your Race it's not just about the job aspect but also the spiritual which is very important.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Working with Run Your Race has led me to many job leads and an interview. Still waiting to hear back from some Federal openings that I applied for. But also, this ministry has helped me to stay upbeat through the whole job search process.

It has all been a positive experience for me. I don't know of any changes I would make.

Run Your Race Ministries is one of the key resoures I use in my work serving those in need in Prince Georges County, Maryland. The unemployed and the under employed in the surrounding communities of Hyattsville, Maryland are blessed to be served by Barbara Miller and her ministry Run Your Race. I have referred many of my clients to her and most of them come back to inform me that not only are they now working but Run Your Race is still assisting them in upgrading their skills as they set goals for more rewarding employment.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have seen young men, older men, young women, older women, even teen agers regain their self respect, sharpen their skills, go out boldly nad return back with job schedules! I have seen them smile broadly as they left the center wearing suits, shirts, ties, shoes and socks donated to them by RYR.

If I had to make changes in this organization, I would expand it's capacity to serve the surrounding communities by offering more computer classes, and upgrading the equipment. I realize that requires increased finances and hope to see the ministry grow in that area.

My husband and I were both out of work for a while and Run Your Race Ministries was placed into our lives, by the Spirit of God. It has helped us in ways we cannot explain. Ms. Miller helped revised my resume. Keeps us informed of positions we may want to inquire about. Tells us when there are things going on that could help us (food, services, job fairs, and etc.). There are times when we only need a word from the Lord and I open my email just to find an encouraging pray or poem. I receive a phone call and Ms. Miller is on the other end, or I pick up the phone and call her and there is a smile on the other end. This is a ministry blessed to help others. I pray for it and know that if there is someone who thinks that all hope is gone they will find a way to encourage you.

I Thank God, I was led to write this little message and hope it help someone.

This ministry helped us stay in our apartment until it was the right time for us to move on. I went on job interviews that I would never have thought about. Met Ms. Tory Johnson on my 60th Birthday in 2010, and may get to see her again just before my 61th. W-O-W nothing but a God can do these things in our lives.

I don't have any changes coming to my mind at this time.

Run Your Race Ministries is an organization that has helped many persons to go from poverty to being a productive member of our society. With economic conditions being as they are, many persons are homeless and without jobs. Run You Race has provided a valuable service in helping persons to write, sometimes, their very first resume and to learn interviewing skills that can make a difference in getting a job or just getting your foot in the door. This organization not only help with these skills but also helps to make sure that the client is properly attired when going for the interview. The service that this organization provides is very much needed in our society today especially for those who are down and out.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have experienced the results in the many testimonies that have been shared through the newsletter and from others who partner with Running Your Race Ministries.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would add a staff person who could help the clients learn how to manage their finances. This would include budgeting, saving a portion of income each month and learning to live below their means.
