The Rogue theatre produces plays thoughtfully and exquisitely. The production quality on display is consistently beautiful without ever being gratuitous -- from costumes to lighting design to the wide range of incredibly talented and diverse local musicians brought in for each performance. Some of Tucson's best actors call Rogue home, and unlike a lot of community theatres in Southern Arizona you will often see Equity actors in their productions as well. Just on the surface this organization is one that clearly has every possible resource dedicated to bringing the highest level of integrity possible to it's productions, continuously employing a large number of artists in the process.
Their mission statement is clear and they've stuck to it from the beginning. The experience of seeing a Rogue production is always thoughtful and engaging, right on down to the audience talk-back they offer after every single performance (something I've never encountered at any theatre company anywhere). They have absolutely cornered the classical theatre market in Tucson, offering the best possible local productions of Ibsen, Chekov, Genet, Brecht and Shakespeare while also bringing us stories from playwrights around the world (Naga-Mandala, Journey To The West, The Night Heron, etc).
The Rogue was recently recognized by The American Theatre Wing, putting Tucson on the map in a way no other arts organization has. It's a pleasure and a privilage to be in the audience of this establishment.
The staff is small, focused and fully engaged with their base of patrons. The board of directors is also very visible -- I've never been to a play at The Rogue without seeing board members greeting people at the door, helping patrons in the parking lot, handing out cookies or participating in the post-show discussions after the show. There's nothing quite like the Rogue in Tucson, we're very lucky to have them.
