I have been to RVHR several times now as a volunteer. As a Virginia Tech student I have struggled over the decision of what I'd like my career to be. In the process of figuring out what exactly I'd like to do with horses for the rest of my life I've been inspired by RVHR. Pat and her family give up so much to help so many of our beloved equine friends. I can only hope to do something as great as they do to help the equine community. They give these horses the best they can offer, in addition to as much love as any horse could get, while they wait to find their new, hopefully permanent family. In addition to benefiting horses, they also offer many students in the area with opportunities to grow in their equine education. I enjoy myself each time I go out there and learn several new things each time I work at RVHR. This program gives the utmost service to both neglected horses that no one else could take responsibility for, and a widespread community. They are well-deserving of any support they can receive.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

many personal ways. Pat has taught me important horse handling skills and modesty skills. They are living proof that we live in an unnecessary material world. They have taught me that it is truly worth it to give up things for something that you love and I will carry that idea with me the rest of my life. It has helped me grow as a person.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

give them more financial support. There are so many things they could do if only they had more money including offering the horses better nutrition, better shelter, and training. With more training the horses are more likely to be adopted. But this truly isn't up to RVHR, it is up to the rest of us to offer them our support.

My name is Alyson,
I first visited the Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue and met Patricia Muncy in the year of 2005. One of my friends did an after school program for troubled teens and being a great horse lover, and having just recently lost my horse to old age (34 yrs. old). I met my friend
and her teen out at horse rescue to share the horsey love.
The first impression that I had was that there was a lot of love going around the whole farm. Patricia was actually building on a large covered run-in area onto an existing shelter by herself.
I immediately thought to myself, "what a tough lady". She is non-stop... It's just amazing how much love and care is given at RVHR. Everyone there comes first.
The day I first went to meet my friend, the teen that she took, what a difference it had made in her life. This teen was able to break away from her troubles to cross to another side and experience on hand one of her greatest loves, horses. I felt that it gave her a place of importance and uniqueness, and hope for dreams in the future.
The next time that I visited RVHR was in May of 2010. After losing my horse that had practically raised me. I had him in my life for 27 yrs. I hoped that one day I would find another horse son/friend, but didn't quite no when. I dreamt often whom I hoped that I would find one day or should say, "find me".
One day, a friend handed me an article in the paper that two horses were in need of a home and that they thought it was time for me to bring a horse back into my life. I had recently just purchased a beatiful farm and I thought, "maybe?" So I went and checked it out. The horse I was interested in, as soon as I pulled up at RVHR, I recognized my interest and said his name. He immediately ran up to the fence line and we had eachother's full attention. I really fell inlove instantly. I remember, Patricia saying something like, "Oh Yeah, he's definitely going home with you, your mom". I thought, "we need to get to know eachother first and then we'll see". Well, Patricia was right off the bat, what an insight! I actually spent about a month going to RVHR as often as I could, about 2 times a week to visit my guy and get a feel for him, before making the big final decision.
Patricia taught me so much in that amount of time. She is truly a Horse Whisperer/Horse Angel. Each horse at the rescue is given such special attention. Each personality was known, each language, need... It was great, Patricia coached me on all the important things I needed to know and taught me a lot of great things, and allowed me to really get to know my guy. I finally decided, I couldn't live without him and took him home with me. At the time, I had just recently purchased a farm by myself and was wondering where my journey in life was taking me, and WOW!!! what a strength I received in my mind and my heart after bringing my horse home. I immediatley started to feel a wonderful balance in my life again. It's crazy, I sometimes look back and think, "Wow, I never rode him with a saddle on before bringing him home, I only put it on him to see how he would react at RVHR". I didn't even know how perfect he would be until I brought him home. Also, the fact too, that he was almost exactly what I had been dreaming about for years before meeting him. The Universe really does provide. All these things, each time we would go on rides together would show themselves. Like, he loves walking through creeks and stopping to sip, and paw. He loves going on trails and what a talker he is. Every morning he is waiting for me at the gate and winnies, and nickers to me. That's all I need to start my day. One of my friends moved her horse out to my place, a mare. The two are in love and my friend and I go on riding adventures a couple times a week. It's one of the things we look forward to the most during a crazy work week. It keeps us so balanced and revives us. At the end of my day, going out to the barn and taking care of the horses is so wonderful.
There is such a need for what Patricia Muncy and RVHR provide. Each horse that ends up there is a life, has a soul, and needs love. You never know, one day they could/will enrich a persons life fulfilled with unending well being...

many ways of having my life enriched by a horse I became a permanent care-giver of.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

open the door for them to have more help financially and to have more people to help them. They literally do the best they can with what they have and make every bit of it count. I hope for RVHR in the future that they can have more space and covered shelters with green pastures, and more people to split the responsibilities.

I often wonder, when giving to any charity, just how much of my gift will actually reach its intended destination. When I give to the Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue I know that every cent of every dollar is being spent on the horses. The members and volunteers of this organization show their dedication in the care they take of the horses, the informational website they maintain and the MANY fundraising events they sponsor throught the year. I am a horse owner myself and when I see news stories of neglect and abuse, I am so glad that the Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue exists. I donate whenever I can and only wish I could give more to this outstanding group of people.

I share the same veternarian as RVHR and she tells me of the dedication of all those involved at the rescue facility.

I cannot think of any changes that I would make to this organization. I think they do a fine job and would only like to see them get more money to support their cause.

Even though I am not a volunteer anymore, I loved my time at RVHR. I grew up with horses and I missed them so much that I sought out RVHR and fell in love with it the first time I worked there. Pat is amazing as is her husband and all the other people who work to make RVHR a great place for horses. My favourite memory is of a horse named Dave that Pat had brought to the farm. He was very neglected and I had the task of brushing him. I cried when I started and those of you who have animals know that they know when you are upset. Dave would turn his head towards me as I brushed him sensing that I was upset and would nuzzle me. He was just so happy to have someone to take care of him and love him. Most animals are so forgiving and I find that horses are more so. It made my day when he did that.
Anyway, RVHR and Pat deserve all the help in the world they can get. Money, supplies, help. All of it is needed at RVHR and my hope is that one day I can return to this haven for one of my favourite animals. My hope is that they get all the help needed to keep helping these majestic creatures.

All that they do. All the horses are so well taken care of and loved. Even the other animals on the farm are well tended and loved.

I think what the RVHR is doing for the HORSES of this region is great. The horses need a safe haven and Patricia Muncy provides that for them. Between Patricia and the Volenteers, the horses are in good hands. I know some of those horses think when they get to the RVHR, that they have died and going to heaven because of the attention they get and the care.

I highly recommend your contacting Patricia Muncy, founder of RVHR, when searching for your "perfect" horse. She is a great resource and is passionate about her mission to "save" unwanted horses. The Rescue has many adoptable horses for your consideration.

While searching online, I found "Storm" - a 7-yr old ArabianX mare at RVHR who stole my heart. I visited with Storm for 3-hours one sunny Nov Sunday and fell in love with her and "adopted" her immediately. She was in my barn by the next Sunday.....and the rest of the story can be summed up as "Happy Trails"!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I'd award the $5,000 contest prize to RVHR. They would spend every cent on the horses and make good use of the funds.

RVHR is truly dedicated to the welfare of used, abused and neglected horses...they are always there to take in "just one more". As everyone knows, caring for horses is not cheap and they do a superb job of providing for their equine friends. Many of these horses have expensive medical needs on top of basic feeding and care...They have my vote!

RVHR is a wonderful organization helping these magnificant creatures that have through no fault of their own become society's throwaways. Once broken spirited, unhealthy and othewise neglected horses are given a second chance at life. The volunteers work tirelessly to meet the horses needs.

My husband and I are former adopters. I had come across the resuce after reading about a story in the local newspaer. We called and were invited out to see for ourselfs first hand what the RVHR was all about. While being there I fell in love w Gentle Ben. Ben was a Belgian draft horse 22yrs of age. He was the love of my life. Pat worked with me on how to ride such a large gentle animal. We are horse owners just not of that size. They took the time to show me how to handle him, ride him. I was able to visit anytime for however long I wanted to while our adoption went through. The rescue is a WONDERFUL place and I thank God everyday for allowing them to alllow me the chance with my gentle giant. We are now looking to adopt a mini...hoping that goes well also. Anyone who wants or needs the experience of horses and the knowledge of the people that handle them RVHR is the place to go...2 thumbs up!!!
