Issues: Animals

Mission: Roanoke Valley Horse Rescue, RVHR, founded in 2002, evolved out of the need in our community for assistance with horses being found in undesirable situations. RVHR is comprised of a serving Board of Directors who volunteer their time to this effort and are joined by volunteers in our community who may also become members of our organization. RVHR is dedicated to educating the public on these issues and how they can be avoided as well as providing assistance to horse owners in our area that are dealing with a similar situation. Other efforts include providing educational clinics on horsemanship and horse care in general for our horse community. We also provide a refuge at our facility for horses that are in need due to starvation or neglect as well as helping these horses find new loving and suitable homes where they shall be watched over by RVHR for the rest of their lives.

I have had the awesome chance to work with Pat the founder of RVHR for over 7 years. I have seen her compassion with horses that is beyond belief. She has rehabilitated horses that would have ended up in horrible places because of behavior, neglect or health issues. We have adopted four horses from the rescue and they are great animals. RVHR gives so much to helping these horses not only through financing, but the number of hours spent working with them. Our 4H club has also been blessed to be able to work with the rescue.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

seeing the success with abused horses.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Give them more land.

I have had the pleasure of visiting RVHR. They are a wonderful organization that gives 150% to the care and welfare of rescued horses. I have seen horses come to them that you would think "no way this animal is going to make it the shape it is in from continuous abuse and mistreatment. These folks take these horses and give them love and the best care they could ever have. The people that run he Horse Rescue give up having things themselves just to buy the food and medication and Veterinary care these mistreated horses need. I would love to these folks win the sweepstakes so they could provide even more wonderful care for these animals. Thank you for your consideration.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

We had two miniture horses that my husband could no longer care for. They took our "babies" and found them a loving home.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

See that more people and organizations would give liberally to this horse rescue so they could build more spaces to house these beautiful creatures

This non-profit is fantastic. While I was in college I volunteered here for about 2.5 years. Patricia Muncy, the President of the rescue, really knows horses. She lives and breathes horses. Any horse who is lucky enough to come here will be taken well care of until an appropriate caregiver comes to take them home.

Over my time volunteering here, I learned a lot about horses I didn't even realize I didn't know. I assisted in rescuing horses, caring for horse, and even training some of the horses. It was a valuable experience and I would wish anyone who thinks they know horses to volunteer here and learn everything they can from Patricia Muncy.

During my time volunteering here, I did meet the horse of my dreams, Gavin. He was a rescue horse whom after spending time with, I decided to give a permanent home. He was wonderfully taken care of and the caregiver application process was very easy to understand. Overall, I would recommend this organization to anyone who wants to learn more about horses (or thinks they know about horses) or to anyone who is looking to own their own horse. Save a life and become a caregiver instead of buying a fancy horse. These horses are wonderful and just need some patience and love to show their true potential.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

assisting with horse rescues and became a caregiver.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

somehow give them more help. They really need more volunteers to be able to keep everything moving productively - particularly the office work so that the horses can get the attention they need and deserve.
