Rating: 5 stars   4 reviews

Address:

3825 170th Pl Ne Bellevue WA 98008 USA

Mission:

Offering a refreshingly different way to approach learning, education through music (etm) frees adults to teach and parent in accordance with the joyful nature of children. Through song and play, etm provides a gateway for contemporary understanding of learning, motivation, child theory and cognitive development.

Programs:

The richards institute conducts courses for teachers, music educators, parents, speech and language pathologists, psychologists, pediatricians, and other professionals in education, in several states across the country. These winter and summer courses reach approximately 550 adults every year, affecting the lives of thousands of children, in the areas of emotional stabilization, cognitive functioning, enhanced language skills, and increased movement and sensory-motor awareness. These are achieved through play and aesthetic experience in the education through music song experiences.

the richards institute conducts week-long summer integrated arts day camp(song/play, visual art, storytelling and creation) aimed at sponsoring the emergent imagination - and thus the intelligence, according to neuroscientists - which include any number of at-risk and special needs populations drawn from various geographic locales (michigan, california), diverse cultural groups (latino, african-american, asian, caucasian, northern/central european immigrant), diverse ses for up to 500 persons per summer. A sliding scale is available for those instructors who have difficulty paying due to teaching in a low income area.

the richards institute sponsors any number of scholarships annually which assist sub-salaried early childhood educators working at headstart, state-sponsored after-school programs, privately sponsored day care, and early infant intervention/parenting programs for at-risk children and parents in michigan, texas, illinois, california, and virginia. Scholarships for these populations are applied directly to each participant's tuition for etm study (already reduced by the institute from $310 per course to $200) annually and target some 150 persons each year.

Reviews for Richards Institute Of Education Through Music

Rating: 5 stars

Thousands of children throughout the United States, Canada and Japan have greatly benefitted from the training educators have received from The Richards Institute. Teachers who participate in the classes sponsored by the Richards Institute gain a high level of understanding of child development as well as the neuroscience of learning. While actively participating in the multi-sensory experiences collected and developed by Mary Helen Richards, children are highly focused on learning. At the same time they develop a high level of regard for others--thus helping to reduce bullying and aggression. As a teaching professional, I have observed hundreds and hundreds of children who have become more available for learning because of the training I have received. I am extremely grateful for the privilege of participating in this study.

This is a group of educators, parents, and community professionals studying together to better understand how children learn. Using music and constructive play, children learn language, social, and musical skills in a very "child-centered" curriculum.
