Out of my 11 years of involvement there is much I could write. But, I will just mention two recent experiences: Last year, despite the slumping economy, we had amazing success in raising money toward the purchase of the 45 acre 'White Acres' property adjacent to Red Rock Canyon. The Palmer Land Trust collaborated closely with us in this, offering valuable advice and support. Working with Palmer gave me a chance to get better acquainted with their outstanding staff. Through the dedicated efforts of geologist Ken Weissenburger and paleontologist Sharon Milito we are publishing the "Geologic Folio - Red Rock Canyon Open Space."

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the preservation of Red Rock Canyon itself, the construction of the Red Rock Canyon trail system, development of a series of educational 'Talks and Walks', and the preservation of 'White Acres.'

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

getting to know a few very special people.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

an outstanding, dedicated President who has consistently maintained a positive 'can do' attitude and volunteers who have been willing to do the hard (and for me, not particularly agreeable) work of building and maintaining trails.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

have a real impact in bringing together a 'Weed Warriors' program to manage noxious weeds throughout the county as well as a new county-wide Parks Authority to make our park systems sustainable.

Ways to make it better...

I actually enjoyed working on trails, and if we had succeeded in preserving the Bock bomb shelter as a future interpretive center.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

bringing in new leadership to take over from those of us who will be moving on.

I became acquainted with Red Rockl Canyon years ago when John S. Bock was a student of mine at Colorado College. He kindly allowed access (!) for my structural geology and field geolgy classes to learn mapping technique. I greatly enjoy the place- I told John that he lived in a veritable

As a member of the original 'Red Rock Canyon Committee' I was involved in the drive to organize community support for the acquisition of the 700+ acre Bock Property for a public 'open space' area. I assisted in outreach & coordination with the planning & development community to avoid the total privatization of the property as a planned/gated community. I also advocated various agencies for the public purchase of the property

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

their dedication to the preservation & limited impact utilization of the property.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

endow the enhanced maintenance of the property and complete a spectacular network of trails.
