I have worked alongside Qsac in various capacities for almost 10 years. I must say that I have never worked with a more professional group of people dedicated to helping individuals with autism. There is a certain sensitivity required to work with any population and Qsac has a rigorous training program that emphasizes both A.B.A. techniques and sensitivity. The result is a staff that cares and it shows. Qsac is an agency that other agencies should shoot to emulate.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have seen consumers that were non-verbal for years begin using words...saying "good morning" and responding to questions. I have seen consumers that frequently acted out now calm and holding a job within the community. I have seen Auditors who have said "we use Qsac as the benchmark for our audits. There is no tighter ship than Qsac".

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Like to see more expansion. Qsac does not serve all areas of the city due to lack of facilities. More funding would mean more home, dayhabs, etc. This would enhance the lives of more families and that is the whole goal.

What is unique about this organization?

There is a core group of people (executives) who just care. they are personally affected by Autism and so they have made it their mission to help...and they do. It is evident and it is why I continue to donate and volunteer.

QSAC offers a wide variety of programs and services that are essential to individuals living with autism. The agency provides programs for preschool children to teens to adults in their 40s. Autism has recently become a "hot" topic and the increased press is bringing much needed awareness to individuals with ASD; however the emphasis is mostly placed on autistic children. It would appear that adults with autism are rarely considered. QSAC understands that children with ASD will grow into adults with ASD. The agency provides a number of programs and services to address the needs of the adult ASD population while continuing to focus on early intervention with younger children and other programs for young adults.

I spent a day at the various QSAC facilities and was able to see firsthand the fabulous work accomplished. The staff is kind, considerate, patient, and knowledgeable. In addition, the staff provided a great deal of information and a number of resources that has been invaluable in dealing with my godchild who was recently diagnosed with autism.

I would advocate for more funding so that QSAC could offer their essential services to even more NYC residents with ASD and their families.

My son - now almost 21 -and family have been received services from QSAC for over 15 years. This organization has been a lifeline and lifesaver to us. From parent training in the early years, to much needed respite ( in our home and weekends away for our son, which he eagerly anticipates), to residential habilitation, vacation programs and case management, QSAC has always been there every step of the way. As my son transitions out of the educational system into the adult world, QSAC is there to offer programs, services and support.

QSAC is now one of the premier agencies that serve those with Autism. They provide services in the home, case management and run quite a few group homes. The residents are extremely well cared for; it is very obvious that this agency has the interests of its consumers as its highest priority. Additionally, there are weekend trips and week long trips for these consumers. These services are sorely needed to help care for and treat this population. Not only does QSAC significantly improve the quality of life for their consumers with Autism, they also dramatically relieve part of the burden of caring for our children with Autism and make being a parent of such a child substantially easier. My child is physically and chronologically an adult, but he will always have the mental age of a 2-3 year old.

every aspect of my life as a parent with an autistic son. Only another parent of a child w/ a severe disability would or could understand the impact QSAC had on my entire family, including my normally developing child.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

give them more money so that they would be able to serve more clients than their current budget allows. The waiting list for services from QSAC is now very long.

How do you feel you were treated by this organization?

Very Well

How did you find this group?

Recommended by his school at the time.

What, if any, change in your life has this group encouraged?

It is hard for an outsider to understand how much of an impact this group has on the lives of its patrons. As corny as this sounds, QSAC has helped me have a more normal life despite the challenges of having a child with Autism.

I have been hugely impressed by the work carried out by this organization and the dedication and hard work of all of the employees. Everyone who works at QSAC is committed to making a difference and the organization provides its services to all those affected by autism in the community, irrespective of the severity of the disorder or the financial circumstances of the family.

We had an incredibly positive experience at the QSAC pre-school. Our twin boys attended the pre-school for 2 years and by the time they graduated we had achieved tremendous improvement on every level; verbal skills, social skills and day to day living skills. Every member of the staff was caring, experienced, informative and completely dedicated to these children. It laid a wonderful foundation for their future.
