As a school social worker, I see first hand the impact of domestic violence on children and teens. As educators, we need the support of strong community partners such as Project Safe to meet the basic needs of families for safety, emotional health, and healing. Thanks to the incredible director and staff at Project Safe, families and students in Athens receive the support needed in situations involving domestic violence. The new Breaking Silence teen texting line provides a new and innovative way to reach teens to prevent and intervene in situations of teen dating violence. It is an honor to serve on the Board of Directors of such a strong and steady non-profit organization.
Ways to make it better...
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
We improve services along the way by adding resources such as transitional housing, the teen texting line, etc, etc.

I thoroughly enjoyed my semester working with Project Safe. What I came to realize over the months of working here is the dedication and passion that the women who work here put into this work. I was honored to be a part of this team of strong women that works tirelessly on behalf other women on this issue that affects primarily women and children. The office space of Project Safe is a very empowering environment. Each day the staff does everything in their power to assist anyone who calls in need of services. As far as my personal role, I appreciated how every task I completed went towards growing the organization, building better relationships with donors, and ultimately furthering the mission of ending domestic violence and assisting those who are affected by it. I couldn't imagine an unpaid position that I would have enjoyed more or completed with as much enthusiasm.

I volunteered with Project Safe for a semester and I the benefits to the families that I worked with were clearly evident by the time I was finished. Everyone had a much more positive outlook on their futures and their families were more comfortable with speaking about the events they had been through. They're amazing!

I can't say enough about Project Safe and I am always so moved by this orgainzation. Our community is a better place for having them in it and I hope P.S. grows in leaps and bounds. I was a client when they first began and if it wasn't for the option of being able to flee to their safehouse I sincerely believe that my life and the lives of my two children would have had very bleak outcomes. They literally saved us on the night that I looked down a double-barreled shotgun. They went above and beyond helping us with food, shelter, clothing, and extensive counseling. P.S. always had advocates by my side on every court date and made sure that I found the right lawyers. It was in their shelter where I wrote my song IN THE DARK (A Song For Battered Women) and later recorded it. It is now posted to YouTube to help spread domestic violence awareness. I am speaking and advocating for them now and moving forward in touching people throughout the world with my story and song. In my heart I know that if it wasn't for Project Safe that I would have never had the chance to do so! They give you back your hope when you think all hope is lost. Hats off to Project Safe!!

I interned with Project Safe for my senior year Social Work practicum from August to May. The work done by this self-less and dedicated staff is astounding - working with Project Safe I was able to experience facilitating support groups for children and adults at the shelter and the outreach department, answering the crisis hotline, advocating for legislation, and a multitude of other programs and opportunities. Project Safe serves victims of domestic violence through numerous avenues, working to assist women, children, and even men, affected by violence and abuse. With so many programs, the agency has many opportunities for volunteers. Having spent 9 months with the agency as an intern, I was able to see the large impact that interns and volunteers can have - Project Safe truly needs the help of people willing to volunteer their time for the cause of working to end violence in the Athens community. I highly recommend becoming involved with Project Safe, for the benefit of both the clients using services and the community members volunteering.

I interned for Project Safe this summer and I could not have asked to intern at a better place with more inspiring people. All the employees and even the volunteers are so great! These people are so passionate about what they do and are so inspiring to work with. I learned so much throughout this summer and met some wonderful people along the way. Like other non-profits, they do it solely for the good of humanity, which says something about this fantastic organization.

I have been involved with Project Safe since the late 1990's -- donating funds, items for the Thrift Shop and also vitally needed shelter supplies from the "needs list". I have also attended many area fundraising and awareness events. Everyone I have dealt with over the years (staff, volunteers) have been very sincere and appreciative. They truly have a heart and passion to help others. Reading the Newsletters and Annual Reports, one is struck by the huge impact Project Safe has on victims of domestic violence throughout the Athens and surrounding communities. I was very impressed to know that my donations would truly benefit those in need. Per PSI's mission statement, "90 cents of every dollar contributed to Project Safe goes to programs and services directly benefiting battered women and children." THIS is the kind of honest and dedicated organization I will continue to support. Thanks for all you do, Project Safe!

Sometimes there are situations that happen in our lives that we did not see coming. When we are young, we have this fairy tale idea in our mind that we will marry our prince charming and live this grand wonderful life and be unbelievably happy. Well, I dreamed of that myself. It just didn't turn out that way for me. I got pregnant at 16 and was told by a pastor that we had to get married for the child. I was terrified!! After the "I Do's", the physical and mental abuse started right away. After a few years of it, I couldn't take it anymore. Project Safe was there for me twice because I didn't learn the first time. You think they will change. They only get worse. I'm so glad I got away and found out that there is a much better life to live without being abused. Project Safe is such an amazing Nonprofit that has helped so many people escape abuse. I now am a public speaker for them and I hope that telling my story can help someone out there who is needing strength to get away.

I have been involved with volunteering roughly four years. It is an amazing organization. They go above and beyond to help the community. I could not have asked for a better program to volunteer in than superheroes. This program works with children impacted by domestic violence. It builds self esteem and educates children on domestic violence while providing a safe emotional space. Donna, the outreach director, is amazing to work with and she truly cares about the volunteers. I have gained so much from my experience at Project Safe. It is literally the most active community organization to end domestic violence. Each individual staff member is passionate and driven at their jobs. Fabulous organization. Amazing staff. Worthy cause.

When I moved to Athens in 2005, I knew no one in town with the exception of a few family members and Project Safe was my first connection to Athens and the people that work so hard to make this a better community. Finding Project Safe, led by such an incredible individual in Joan Prittie, and with a mission that was about serving those who are the most vulnerable in our community, was one of the most important events for me since moving to Athens. Over the past five years we have worked hard to reduce Project Safe’s dependency on grants and fickle federal funding, build a strategic plan that would support and improve the impact of the organization on its clients and help educate the community to create systematic change that works to stop the cycle of violence. Today, after more than five years of serving on Project Safe’s board and in various offices, I am sure that I have gained far more from my time with such an incredible organization than I could have ever hoped to contribute to it.
