Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: Project Purr is an all-volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to saving lives of unsocialized cats and kittens by providing accessible low cost feral cat spay/neuter to all Santa Cruz County, California residents, regardless of income. Project Purr advocates Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) as the only humane solution to reducing cat overpopulation.

Target demographics: Santa Cruz County, California

Programs: Project purr is an all-volunteer nonprofit feral cat/kitten rescue organization. During fiscal year 2014, 484 cats/kittens were spay/neutered or adopted, and 135 feral barn cats were rescued and rehomed from the county shelter. Project purr's "fix & feed pets in need" donation based pet food program collected and disbursed 22,476 pounds of dog and cat food to established pantries for the pets of those in need. Project purr received $10,000 from friends of santa cruz county animal services, a nonprofit which supports the county shelter. Project purr was recognized in two international magazines, cat fancy and best friends, for our innovative and successful rescue/relocation barn cat program. Project purr had its first full year opening and operating a benefit resale shop in downtown santa cruz. Staffed by volunteers and filled with donations from the community, "rescued treasures" is funding all of our programs and provides us with the venue and opportunity to share our mission statement about trap-neuter-return, the only humane solution to feral cat population control. Rescued treasures hosted several downtown santa cruz first friday art tours and an antiques road show event at the new charity shop. Project purr held its final rummage sale and rescued treasures was voted best thrift store by the santa cruz sentinel readers' choice awards.

Project Purr is a fantastic organization. This is truly a labor of love. They are dedicated and passionate about making a difference in the lives of cats. We have adopted 6 feral cats from Project Purr and it was a wonderful experience. Our 4 acres are rodent free and the cats provide daily entertainment chasing each other through the treetops and much needed companionship for our sole dog. There is nothing funnier than watching the cats deal with the chickens stealing their food and sunny napping spots. The cats enact revenge and tackle the hens when they're rooting about. Even my cat hating husband is now a fan of our beauties. They work hard for their Friskies and come when they are called.

Project Purr helped us save two feral cats who were living at Lakeview Middle School but needed to be relocated. We had previously had the cats fixed but our principal said they had to go anyway. We found a new home for our ferals (through a flyer at Aptos Starbucks) but had no idea how to successfully transition the cats to their new environment. Lynne at PP let us borrow a hutch (for 3 weeks) and all the supplies we needed (for free), plus she spent hours answering all my questions. I am happy to report the cats have stayed put in their new home and seem to be happy and healthy.

Project Purr comprises an extraordinarily dedicated and compassionate team that serves feral cats and kittens in Santa Cruz County. They oversee a large TNR program, maintain feral communities that don't reproduce but do hold the niche. They also place ferals who have no safe colony as barn or garden cats, providing extensive wisdom and support to help people establish these beautiful helpers as rodent control troops. They hand tame and socialize feral kittens, and place them in loving adoptive homes. And, last but certainly not least, they are active advocates, educating and assisting. They are well organized and they truly care. I have had only positive experiences and I recommend them without reservation.

Just found the Great Non-Profits site tonight. Was posting a review for something else (unfortunately a very bad experience) when one of my "fur babies" jumped in my lap. Thank you, Project Purr, for bringing these super sweet little kitties into my life.

We had a great initial meeting, a smooth adoption, and 2 (!) cute additions to our family.

We continue to send the foster parents updates. Thank you for helping these small beings who need someone!
