Someone who had 3 hours of volunteer time could: help with our fund-raising to help raise additional funds for the horses.
Geographic areas served: Florida and in particular all of Broward county
Mission:
FOUNDED IN 1987, OUR NON PROFIT; FLORIDA RESEARCH INSTITUTE for EQUINE NURTURING, DEVELOPMENT and SAFETY OR F.R.I.E.N.D.S.;GREW OUT OF A NEED TO ESTABLISH A SAFE HAVEN FOR A LARGE GROUP OF HORSES IN SOUTH FLORIDA THAT WERE FOUND TO BE CARRIERS OF EQUINE INFECTIOUS ANEMIA OR EIA. WITHOUT THIS SAFE HAVEN,THOSE HORSES AND THE ONES WE CONTINUE TO PROVIDE HOMES FOR TODAY, WOULD HAVE BEEN EUTHANIZED EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE ESSENTIALLY HEALTHY. WE ALSO PROVIDE CERTAIN RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES TO HELP IN THE FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF A VACCINE OR CURE. IN ADDITION, WE PROVIDE INFORMATION ON A NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL LEVEL REGARDING EIA AND ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC FURTHER REGARDING THIS CONDITION. DUE TO CURRENT LAWS,HORSES TESTING POSITIVE FOR EIA, MUST BE QUARANTINED ACCORDING TO SPECIFIC GUIDELINES OR EUTHANIZED. WE PROVIDE COMPLIANCE WITH THE QUARANTINE GUIDELINES THEREBY ELIMINATING THE NEED TO EUTHANIZE WHAT IS ESSENTIALLY A HEALTHY HORSE WITH THE ABILITY TO LIVE OUT THEIR NORMAL LIFE SPAN. SPONSORSHIP OF THESE HORSES BY PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY BENEFITS BOTH THE HORSE AND THE MANY PEOPLE WHO ENJOY THE POSITIVE EXPERIENCE OF CARING FOR AND INTERACTING WITH A HORSE WHILE FEEDING, RIDING,GROOMING,ETC. OUR GOAL IS TO SAVE THESE HORSES FROM BEING “PUT DOWN” BY PROVIDING FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS IN THE COMMUNITY WITH THE CHANCE TO “OWN” A HORSE THROUGH SPONSORSHIP. WE ALSO HAVE A VERY ACTIVE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM THAT BENEFITS THE COMMUNITY AS WELL.
Results:
We have given sanctuary to many horses since 1987 and continue to do so allowing many people the chance to participate in something worthwhile in the community.

Just an all around wonderful place! I can't believe the difference this charity has made not only in lives of deserving horses but also in the lives of the families that volunteer there. FRIENDS rescues abused and would other wise be destroyed horses and turns them into loving, well cared for ...

My family and I have volunteered at F.R.I.E.N.D.S. for about a year now and we sponsor several horses. Our kids, now 19 and 15 have always been animal lovers, but this organization has touched us in a way we would never imagine. While we do give a lot of our time in volunteering, we truly ...

I have sponsored horses at FRIENDS for 5 years. They take GREAT care of the horses, even though they don't have all the modern tools for horse care. Their vet is so patient and kind. It's a great organization and I hope you will sponsor a horse or volunteer to help in some other way...
