Description: Suncoast Humane Society was founded in 1971 as the Animal Aid Society of Englewood. A dedicated handful of community pioneers incorporated as a 501(c) 3 non profit, charitable organization.

The original small building was enlarged throughout the years as the pet-overpopulation problem grew throughout Southwest Florida. The latest addition, which includes the visiting and adoption offices, cattery and kennels, was constructed in 1997.

At about that time, the corporate name was changed to Suncoast Humane Society to better reflect the widespread coverage area of the services and programs offered by the organization. Sheltering agreements with Charlotte and Sarasota Counties mandated a service area of over 450 square miles. Programs and services coverage include large portions of Charlotte, Sarasota, and Lee Counties (Boca Grande). Although animal control contracts have since been discontinued, our services and programs extend far beyond those perimeters. Examples include our pet adoption, low cost spay/neuter, preventive health care, and our pet pantry programs.

Suncoast Humane Society operates one of the few “open admissions” shelters in Florida. We accept all animals brought to us by the public, regardless of health or temperament. Medical and behavioral staff evaluate each animal for adoptability. Healthy animals with stable temperaments and good behavior patterns are recommended for adoption. There is no time limit set on their stay, barring incurring serious illness or aggressive behavior. Our wonderful group of “Foster Home” volunteers, along with our Pet Placement Partners (Breed Rescues), helps to make these policies possible.

Suncoast Humane Society exists to “reduce the numbers of homeless animals and to improve the quality of life.” With your support we will work to meet the needs of our communities to achieve our mission.

Mission:
Suncoast Humane Society exists to reduce the numbers of homeless animals and improve the quality of life.
Results:
We accepted nearly 4,000 animals in 2009 and through our onsite clinic, spayed/neutered nearly 1,400 animals at affordable or low-cost fees.  We recently added preventative services at our clinic to further help pet owners afford continuing care and keep pets in their homes where they belong.

I thought I would have to bring them to animal services where cats are put to sleep seven days after ... more »

The lady also told me the brother to her female was still available at Suncoast, as their human mother had passed away. Since my cat had died a... more »
