Mission

The mission of the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County has been to help disadvantaged people improve their lives through equal access to justice. Legal Aid offers individual assistance, community education, and resolution of systemic problems to vulnerable San Mateo County residents. Legal Aid receives funding from private foundations, government contracts and grants, and individual donors.

Many problems facing low-income people cannot be solved individually; therefore, Legal Aid takes a leading role in cooperative strategies to address core problems. Seeking to resolve issues through systemic change, Legal Aid collaborates with over 20 community organizations and county departments.

As an independent legal services provider, the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County is not bound by restrictions imposed by federal legal services funding. Legal Aid has received numerous awards for excellence in the delivery of legal services and has been recognized as an indispensable part of the safety net for low-income residents.

Legal Aid leverages its resources by maintaining strong relationships with the private bar. Over 200 Pro Bono volunteers from San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara Counties ensure justice for all by serving individual clients and by leading Legal Aid on the Board of Directors and other Committees.
