Mission

Heritance coordinates a network of museum professionals who provide skills, knowledge, and services free of charge to museums in some of the poorest and most remote regions of the globe.  To read our executive summary: http://www.heritance.org/corpdocs/Heritance_ExecutiveSummary_071106.pdf

Key Facts

Geographic areas served:

International

Target demographics:

Community-based museums world-wide, often in regions afflicted by poverty, disease or strife—currently including museums in Rwanda, Kenya, South Africa, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, France.

Results to date:

Heritance has established partnerships with over 20 museums on four continents and an international network of museum professionals who have delivered a full-range of technical and financial services free of charge to museums.

Direct beneficiaries per year: 18-24 museums and their stakeholders -- staff, volunteers, board members, international specialists who do research on their collections.

Indirect beneficiaries per year: 1000's of people who receive services from these museums in the form of literacy training, life-long learning, democratic participation in the community's self-definition and self-determination.

Obstacles:

Each project which is free to our partners costs Heritance about $15,000 per year.  Although our work serves 1000’s of people per year, museum development --like other forms of education—is a “harder sell” to donors than many other kinds of development work.

Your donation of 50 enables us to:

provide 2 months of on-line consulting, technical support and distance learning to our partner museums.

Your donation of 100 enables us to:

fund a day of on-site consultation by a specialist in a Heritance partner museum.

Your donation of

200

enables us to:

fund a seed grant for the completion of a museum project, such as the software for a new archiving system or structure for an interactive display.
