Mission
Our goal is to provide outreach services to the senior LGBT community in the Coachella Valley. The Center provides social and recreational opportunities as well as referral services and programs to assist seniors in maintaining independence and self-sufficiency.
We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with our primary objective being to network and interact with the greater LGBT and senior communities in the area and provide a space that is welcoming, safe and active. We encourage you to stop by the Golden Rainbow and see our facility!
Key Facts
Geographic areas served:
Riverside County Calfornia
Target demographics:
We target the largely underserved Senior LGBT community in the Coachella Valley (i.e. greater Palm Springs area) by providing support, social activities, classes and programs to enable seniors to have an alternate “family”.
Among the many programs currently offered are: Mental Health (including PEI - Prevention & Early Intervention Plan with Riverside County), Fitness atter Fifty, Tai Chi, Computers, Self Defense, Financial and MediCare counselling, and the Food Pantry.
Results to date:
Due to the expanding need for services and recognition of our successes, GRSC recently moved from a modest one-room facility in nearby Cathedral City to a significantly larger property in downtown Palm Springs. The larger location provides much needed space for expanded programs such as a weekly Food Pantry supplying necessities to the disadvantaged.
Direct beneficiaries per year: Serving about 100 each week
Indirect beneficiaries per year: 50 per week (phone calls, etc.)
Obstacles:
Although we have been rather successful in obtaining grants, funding for programs is an ongoing issue.
What your donation will allow us to do:
Expand programs and reach additional senior LGTB individuals. 40% of LGBT elders live alone and in poverty.
Your donation of $50 enables us to:
Feed 5 people
Your donation of $100 enables us to:
Provide education classes such as a 10-week Spanish class for one person or 5 one-hour computer classes. These classes help to lessen isolation.
Your donation of $1000 enables us to:
Gay elders and twice as likely to attempt suicide that the straight counterparts. These funds will provide Mental Health services for 75 seniors.
