Description: While the National Park Service takes care of the core needs inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Friends of the Smokies helps the park do even more, catalyzing efforts to study, protect, and restore our natural heritage; expanding programs that benefit schoolchildren in surrounding communities; restoring and sharing the park''s rich cultural history; improving opportunities for safe recreation in the backcountry; and acting on other timely opportunities to preserve and protect the Great Smoky Mountains. Working together, we make the Smokies even greater.

Target demographics: Everyone who loves, lives near, visits, and takes cherished memories away from the Smoky Mountains.

Direct beneficiaries per year: The natural and cultural resources in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Someone who had 3 hours of volunteer time could: Assist with a special event to raise funds for Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Since 1993, Friends of the Smokies has raised more than $34 million to help fund important projects in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The financial figures for Friends of the Smokies for Fiscal Year 2008 do not reflect $916,924 raised in 2008 for three internally-managed endowments that will all benefit the Smokies’ 800+ miles of recreational trails. The Friends of the Smokies organization is by far one of the greatest organizations related to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
