Community Council for the Homeless at Friendship Place
Mission:
Mission Statement:To enable people in the upper Northwest area of the District of Columbia who are, or have been, at risk of homelessness to rebuild their lives with the involvement of the community.Friendship Place began in 1992 as a grassroots, all volunteer community response to the realization that there were no services for homeless individuals in the upper Northwest area of Washington, DC. Sixteen years later, a professional staff and over 300 volunteers are carrying out the mission to "enable homeless individuals, or those at risk of becoming homeless, to rebuild their lives with the involvement of the community." Beginning with street outreach, we actively seek out individuals living in the alleys, parks and streets of the community and attempt to build trust with them. From there we invite them to Friendship Place, our daytime resource center for services, referrals and advocacy. Friendship Place supports small, local congregation-based shelters and develops permanent housing for clients.
