Target demographics: Hurricane surivors in St Bernard Parish, Louisiana, who are still struggling to rebuild 3 years after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated their lives and their homes.

Direct beneficiaries per year: 5,000

Geographic areas served: Greater New Orleans

Mission:
As they undertake one of the most daunting disaster recovery efforts this nation has ever seen, the people of St. Bernard have very practical needs. They need laundry facilities so they can keep themselves and their children clean. They need phones so they can maintain contact with family members scattered across the country. They need internet connections so they can find information about rebuilding their businesses and their homes. They need a centralized location for services so they can receive donated supplies and assistance easily and with dignity. And they need a place to come together to enjoy a hot, nutritious meal and share their ongoing frustrations and successes with their neighbors. The Community Center of St Bernard is dedicated to providing hurricane survivors with the recovery resources they need in a safe and all-inclusive setting.
Results:
Today the Community Center continues to actively serve local residents caught up in the ongoing struggle to rebuild their lives. In the period January – June 2009, we distributed 140,915 lbs of free food to 4,711 low-income residents.  During the last quarter we made 648 referrals and distributed 7,479 flyers to help our clients to find the specific services and resources they need. In June 2009 alone, our public computer lab was used 885 times, and 272 applications for Food Stamps were processed here. And every week, we provide free clothes to more than 200 families.

I spent a volunteer week with them, doing whatever odd jobs they needed - very non-glamorous work, but they were very thankful and appreciative. There is a small permanent staff doing the non-glamorous every day. The area... more »

I think the community center is doing a whole lot for people in st. bernard parish. Volunteering at the center was a different experience then other places because I came into close contact with a lot of individuals affected by the storm. I'm really glad I had the opportunity to volunteer there, and... more »
