Description: Byte Back provides computer literacy classes, courses in computer software and hardware, job readiness training and classes to prepare our students for eight industry recognized information technology (IT) certifications. We prepare our students for employment opportunities that are abundant and growing in our area. Our goal is to assist students in obtaining and developing careers that provide living wages with opportunities for advancement. We provide classes at nineteen satellite locations that are accessible by public transportation.

Thanks to our volunteer instructors and community partnerships, Byte Back is extremely cost effective. Our job training programs have a return on investment of 1082%, meaning that every $100 invested in training unemployed students seeking work results in a $1,082 increase in student earnings.

Technology is terrifying to many people. Byte Back provides classes at neighborhood locations where residents feel safe and welcome. Our curriculum is hands on and project-based, so that students learn by doing. We remove barriers by ensuring wheelchair access; offering classes in daytime, evening and on weekends; and providing assistive technology to students with disabilities. We customize the curriculum to the interests and learning styles of specific groups, such as youth, seniors and Spanish speakers. Our computer literacy classes are longer in duration than most to ensure that our students are fully comfortable with technology and eager to learn more. Byte Back staff and volunteers are friendly, supportive and encouraging.

In addition to helping students obtain employment, Byte Back assists in job creation by helping students to start their own neighborhood computer repair shops. We would like to share a story with you about one of our senior students. She came to us with no computer skills. After completing PC for Beginners for Senior Citizens and Office Track, she approached our staff with great excitement. She said that she loved the courses and had learned so much that she wanted to move forward and enroll in more advanced classes. The staff person began to tell her about the Microsoft Office certification program. She interrupted, saying that she was not interested in software; she wanted to learn how the computers work. She then took our A+ certification class and completed an 80 hour internship. Today, she has a small computer repair shop which she runs out of her home. We are thrilled to see this grandmother, who once had little confidence in her abilities, utilize Byte Back to thrive and fulfill a dream.

Mission:
Byte Back’s mission is to improve economic opportunity for low-income residents of the Washington DC area by providing computer training and employment readiness skills.
Results:
Over the past four years, Byte Back dramatically increased its income, the number of residents served and the number and types of classes offered. We expanded the number of students taught annually from 293 to 1098 (275%) and the number of course slots provided per year from 365 to 1427 (291%). In addition, we became a licensed post-secondary school and added a number of in-dustry-wide recognized IT certification training programs to our array of classes. In 2010 Byte Back won an honorable mention from the Washington Post Awards for Excellence in Non-profit Management.
Milestones...

In 2011

 Byte Back enrolled 45 District Residents in a program (90 course hours and an 80 hour intern-ship) designed for individuals who are interested in starting their own neighborhood computer repair business. Those students wishing to start their own business worked with WACIF to do so. Those who wanted employment as a Computer Support Specialist received placement assistance from Byte Back.

 Provided free refurbished computers to 552 program graduates and a year of free internet to 349 program graduates, enabling them to continue practicing their new skills and accessing services and information from home. (Thanks to partnerships with First Time Computers, Cricket Commu-nications and the DC Public Library.)

In 2010...

 We were included in the 2010-11 Catalogue for Philanthropy.

 Began teaching computer classes in Spanish and in American Sign Language in the fall of 2011 in order to assist more DC residents to bridge the digital divide.

I began volunteering at Byte Back, Inc. through "Office Track," an intensive course designed for students to learn Microsoft Office Suite, including Quick Books. I love to learn, and enjoyed the applied teaching methods, "click, click" of the mouse, for example. At first, I swept floors, but then ... more »

Working in adult education in the District of Columbia, I have been hearing about Byte Back since I first came to the area. However, it wasn't until I began directing a local Americorps program and placed two Americorps members at Byte Back that I had the pleasure of gaining a better understanding ... more »
