Mission

ACR exists to preserve, protect and manage ACR properties as sanctuaries for native plants and animals; to educate children and adults about the natural environment and the need to protect it, through the experience and enjoyment of ACR sanctuaries; and to support research and conservation efforts that enhance the preservation and management of the natural resources of ACR sanctuaries.

Key Facts

Description

Audubon Canyon Ranch maintains 2,000 acres in Northern California as wildlife sanctuaries and centers for education. ACR teaches visitors principles of stewardship and increases understanding of ecosystems through scientific research.

Programs

Created in 1962 to protect a major Northern California Heronry, ACR has grown to include three diverse preserves -- 2,000 acres of tideflats, marshlands, coastal prairie, redwood groves and other fragile wildlife habitats. ACR's Education Programs provide more than 6,000 schoolchildren each year with in-class natural history presentations and on-site, docent-led visits to ACR preserves, and integrated curricular materials for teachers at no charge to the schools or the students. Each year, almost 100 new adult Docent and Ranch Guide volunteers are trained to interpret the natural history of ACR's Preserves to visiting schoolchildren and families. Nearly 7,000 visitors enjoy nature firsthand at the Preserves each year. ACR's Conservation Science and Habitat Protection (CSHP) Program supports the preservation and management of the natural resources of ACR sanctuaries, and contribute to local conservation efforts and the international body of scientific literature.
