Description: ABOUT A PLACE CALLED HOME
In 1993, a year after the devastating civil unrest in South Central, we officially opened our doors as a straightforward neighborhood drop-in center, offering local youth a safe place to hang out, grab a snack and relax after school. Our simple two-room set-up in a church basement eventually relocated to a renovated 10,000 square foot warehouse at the corner of 29th Street and Central Avenue, where APCH grew into a full-fledged community center, offering a comprehensive menu of multidisciplinary programs and services for youth and families.
APCH is recognized citywide, statewide and nationwide as a model after-school and summer program, but our most important accomplishments are evidenced by the thousands of youth that have benefited from our programs, which are unique and vital in the South Los Angeles community. APCH offers five program components (1) Educational Services with tutoring and mentoring; (2) Health, Nutrition and Well-Being with fresh cooked meals and fitness activities throughout the day; (3) Community Services and Outreach which links our members and families to support and resources; (4) Bridge to the Future which offers teen programs, internships, guidance counseling, SAT prep and college scholarships; and (5) Creative Expressions which offers dance, music, audio engineering, theater, filmmaking, visual and fine arts.
The youth and families we serve are subjected to gang activity, crime, and harsh economic conditions on a daily basis. With the support and opportunities APCH provides, children from all backgrounds are able to transcend the challenges that surround them, fulfill their greatest potential, and go on to have fulfilling, productive lives. Please join APCH by becoming a donor, volunteer, intern, mentor, and through many other opportunities. Together we can make a tangible difference in the world.
