I am in the education field and I am still to find another method as simple and cost effective to propagate literacy such as the one PlanetRead uses. SLS is indeed a fun and subsconscious way to learn literacy!

PlanetRead is an amazing social venture that is doing an awesome job of promoting literacy among all in India. PlanetRead does subtitling with songs which is really a mere fun for all age groups. This makes the individual read the subtitles and sing along thus promoting their reading abilities. Today everyone has access to television including slum areas giving easy accessibility to songs with subtitles. This simple yet innovative idea of Same Language Subtitling is making a good difference among the weak readers in our country.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Even with all current music channels to which we have access now, am still an ardent fan of Rangoli in Doordarshan(a National TV channel in India) channel. Am keen about learning Hindi and these subtitles in the songs helped me a great deal to learn Hindi and have fun at the same time. Seriously people it's amazing that such subtitles can make a real difference in enhancing our reading abilities.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I think PlanetRead should expand to reach all the languages in India

When I first hear about PlanetRead a few years ago, I was amazed by the simplicity of their work. Like many simple ideas, it's actually quite brilliant and has had an incredible impact on literacy levels around India. I remember first hearing about the organisation while I was at Stanford University, and as a fan of appropriate technology I loved the fact that it used already existing technologies (and behaviours) to enhance reading skills in an extremely clever way. The team at PlanetRead are amazingly dedicated, smart and creative, and as committed as anyone I have met to their cause.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Through talking with the team, reading about it in the media and journals, through colleagues in international development

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Give them more money!

I know some of my friends who work at PlanetRead and it's really great to see the commitment they have towards spreading literacy. Their idea is so simple and brilliantly executed. I have seen these programs on TV in my mother tongue and it's really nice.

Even for someone who knows the language well, it helps when you can't follow the lyrics of the songs - these subtitles will be so useful to make our country literate.

Am wondering why this idea has not been implemented still on a national level and why are other not yet adapting this model?

The simplicity of the work that PlanetRead does is amazing. I been a part of the team in the past and have done research in the field of how this idea helps improve children's reading skills. I am teacher and also run a children's creche and I know for sure SLS will help people with weak reading skills.

I've see how people get excited about being able to understand the lyrics of the songs - it's great way to motivate people and make the weak readers learn quickly.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Increase the programs they do and take this idea international.

SLS, a concept pioneered by PlanetRead is aimed at increasing the literacy levels in India. It uses the idea of subtitling lyrics of film songs on TV, in the ‘same’ language that they are sung.

I’ve personally experienced the results of this organization in seeing how children get interested to listen to film songs, read the SLS and sing along and their want for more songs thus making them read more without them knowing that they are increasing their level of literacy.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would help PlanetRead increase their publicity through media and try to have SLS in more TV channels and programmes.

I know by experience that subtitles greatly enhance reading ability in children. Watching kids' programs with subtitles in English is one factor other than reading books with them that has greatly contributed to my kids' reading skills. There is no doubt that SLS program of planetread will benefit a big portion of India's population that has not had chance to continue education or the time and leisure to sit down with books. Television in India reaches a greater number of people than even public libraries. Not only that, since most education in India is encouraged in English Medium, local language literacy gets a great boost through planetread's SLS program.

I am a witness to the genuine fondness my kids have for BookBox stories and their eagerness to listen to these stories in other languages. This is so, inspite of the various other fast paced entertainments available to them.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I guess, increase awareness about the availabilty and effectiveness of this program. Its reach has to be increased and ofcourse more so in Telugu :)
